How to Draw 3D Isometric Shapes in Adobe Illustrator Tutorial

So, I've been using illustrator for about 24 years now and I've also been creating isometric art. I have to say that this tutorial was really good and taught me some new things to get me out of some old ways of doing things. I have only recently started to appreciate smart guides but I didn't know that they would activate on elements that were on a lower, locked layer. This makes the method of making the grid grey with a small stroke weight instead of converting it to a guide a better technique since the guides can often obscure the stuff you're trying to draw and if you're not using smart guides, they don't snap if they are on a separate layer than what you're drawing on, or they can be just generally finicky. Good job!

If I think about it your tutorial had nothing special to it. You just explained things, showed some examples, applied your explanation to them and that was it.But the way you explained, the way you showed those examples.. everything was so professionally done. At 5:55 : Instead of changing the color and linestroke of the hexagons, you can also change the properties of that entire layer to 'template'. In the same layer dialog box, you can change the opacity too.

I'd dupe and hide one copy of the grid and make the remaining on into a guide layer, that way your points auto-snap to the hex grid, if you're doing non-square forms that might be irritating though

This is driving me insane. When I go to the pen tool and start making the box, the two strokes from each face overlap eachother and don't line up. Do you know what I mean? It's not a perfect. I then can't also shift and drag to extend the cube

Go to View and Uncheck the Snap to Pixel/Snap to Grid option. I know it's late but it almost drove me insane so be sure to uncheck it everytime.

Another option is using triangles, imagine one side of the cube being parted in two, so two triangles form one side, than you don't have to rely on the intersect point, which can be difficult with complex illustrations :)

Having trouble with the resizing part, with the direct selection tool even if I only have the top four points selected, it resizes one of them (creating a weird shape). If I group them beforehand as someone here said, it moves the whole top shape but doesn't bring the rest with it (as shown in the video). Thanks in advance if anyone can help!!

Awesome guides! Though, I have one issue. The first rectangle strokes are 0.25, and as soon as I draw the second rectangle wanting to make cube, the strokes are 1pt and I tried to decrease that any way possible, it doesn't work, it just flips back up to 1pt. +Mateo Zlatić That's really strange. Maybe try selecting both of your shapes at the same time and then removing the stroke, and then add the stroke back in. maybe that will cause them to work together better. I've never had that happen to me so I'm not sure what's up there.

I can't use shift to extend the shape. it just resizes. also, if I try to alt click on a shape(the left square) and extend one by one manually, I can still see a faint gap between the shapes, although when I zoom in too much it disappears. I used the snaps but still...

sadly no :( ..a theory of mine is that the hex grid was badly done at the beginning ..but if you used the hex grid from the description then that's a different problem..still, if you solve this in any way please tell me ...i'm still pretty noob in illustrator :V
