Been watching jazza's stuff for a year or so now from time to time. I should subscribe since every time I look for something to do with art he has a video. His voice is nice and soothing when speaking so helps his tutorials a lot. I have made huge leaps in drawing these last few years, once though impossible by myself.

summary of main points i got out of this. did i miss anything? Forest - Identify what you're trying to convey - Create visual highlights - Start with blocking, rough out scene and location of elements - Background, midground, foreground - - f/g frames and directs you to the m/g - - m/g is where most of storytelling takes place - - b/g indicates scale and setting - Draw from f/g towards b/g - - easier to know what to hide - - b/g first may constrain you - Use asymmetry, variation, contrast, highlights - Add some flaws to make pictures look natural - Atmospheric perspective: further objects acquire b/g hue (e.g., blue or red sky) Medieval Town - Perspective more significant with buildings - After blocking to locate main features, identify location of details, people etc. - Shade from dark to light - Lighten towards the horizon (atmospheric persepctive)

I've been drawing figures and humans. Those i believe are my strength.... but backgrounds are my weakness and that really discourages me. This was a really helpful video. I needed that video after looking up many tips on how to do backgrounds. I am about to start a sci fi web comic and much of this applies. I know about perspective, but do you have any tips for drawing/painting night time cities with plenty of lights, or streets in night time?

@SpiritBladeFox
@SpiritBladeFox 2 жыл бұрын
I hope this is not too late but if you want to make an art piece suggesting it’s nighttime, study how lighting works in different light settings. Also learn how the light source (in this case the street lights) shines onto 3D objects and different textures (like in a painting). And use perspective to place the objects.

You’ve set the scene for a great place. As two young adventurous teens get lost in the woods, the come to a tranquil, beautiful clearing. As they emerge, a few grazing deer scamper away into the dense trees. Through the clearing the see a grand mountainous area, and marvel at the sight. Then one spots a cosy hut, letting off smoke. They wander absent minded towards the small cabin. And the door opens... ...an old man, with a cap, long white beard and stick charges out, stick arised. He said “sorry, kids. I thought you were something else, come in, it’s not safe out here.” Inside they all sit in a two roomed house. One room the bedroom, the other, everything else. Three red armchairs sit round an oak coffee table. A breakfast bar closes of the kitchen from the living room. Some paintings hang on the yellow walls. The man brings out some biscuits, and lays a tray of them on the table, where the three of them sit down. One of the teens asks the man “so, who did you think we were” and the man looks anxious, and dashes his eyes round the room. The village nearby, they want to kill me...” the man noticed it was getting dark, and got even more anxious. “I have a special skill, they’re scared of..”. A full moon arose from the bundle of trees. And he fell to the floor, twitching and screaming. And those screams turned into howls. And he transformed. A poor old man, to a great gurgling beast. “AWOOOOOOOOOOO”. And the teens ran into the clearing. Loosely heading for the mountains. The werewolf speeding after them...

Nicely done! I'm happy you showed us without adding color. It's probably important to get values down understand balance. When moving to color, there are so many methods, but I wish I knew how to go from line drawing to painterly feel. It almost seems like at some point in the sketch, you would just slap on more layers and starting painting over your lines.

Very helpful, my gosh. I'm working on a sci-fi comic, and I've yet to go beyond writing it and character design, and the environments have been giving me anxiety to think about, it's daunting. But I hadn't even thought about things like not everything needs to be detailed, and that besides telling a story, if I arrange things visually balanced, it'll help me design layouts and scenes without worrying too much about consistency and exact placement. This was really helpful
