Microsoft Visio is software for drawing diagrams. These include floor plans, electrical diagrams, flowcharts, org charts, building plans, floor plans, data flow diagrams, process flow diagrams, business process modeling, swim lane diagrams, 3D maps, and many more.
If appropriate for your needs, Visio can produce extremely helpful, slick, useful diagrams of all types, and these can provide the professional look you want for presentations, reports, audits, building plans, floor plans, documentation, and modeling better ways to do things. Visio includes a big library of shapes/symbols used in dozens of diagram types. These symbols represent specialized pieces of diagrams such as process flow diagrams, business process modeling, data flow diagrams, and many more. These are used widely in various fields for various purposes.
Microsoft Visio can be used in all below settings and more:
In Architecture: Create Floor plans, plumbing and electrical diagrams
In any field: A flowchart, which can take various forms, can be used to document and analyze a process; standardize a process for efficiency and quality; communicate a process for training or understanding by other parts of the organization; and identify bottlenecks, redundancies and unnecessary steps in a process and improve it.
In software engineering and business analysis: Data flow diagrams (DFDs) can provide a focused approach to technical development, in which more research is done upfront to get to coding. Business analysts use DFDs to analyze existing systems and find efficiencies. Diagramming the process can uncover steps that might otherwise be missed or not fully understood.
In business: Business Process Modeling and Notation (BPMN) is targeted at participants and other stakeholders in a business process to gain understanding through an easy-to-understand visual representation of the steps. At a more involved level, it’s targeted at the people who will implement the process, giving sufficient detail to enable precise implementation
In chemical engineering or process engineering: A Process Flow Diagram (PFD) is a type of flowchart that illustrates the relationships between major components at an industrial plant. Diagrams can serve to document, analyze, audit, or model a better way.

Hey Vad... Good Video, but I have some questions. Can I edit a room so its not rectangular or square but has its corners cut off so it winds up having six (6) sides? And is there a way to spec an outside 6" wall once a room has been created with 4" walls on the inside? Next, where do I find a template for a garage door? Last question (today LOL)... If you want to create a floor plan for a whole house, is it best to outline the overall house shape and plug in rooms where they belong, or would you create all the rooms and simply paste them on a blank page... then maybe group or merge all the rooms? TIA for the advice and help.-Mike

I have been using SmartDraw for many years. How does Visio handle wall sizing such is 6" (5.5) and 4" (3.5) walls?

Specify the height and width of a shape The Size & Position window has fields for height and width where you can type an exact number and a unit of measure. For example, imagine that you have a small rectangular table that you want to fit into an office layout diagram. The table top is 1 foot, 9 inches by 1 foot, 5 inches. When you drag a rectangular table from the Office Furniture stencil, you see that the dimensions are 3 feet, 6 inches by 6 feet. Instead of using the resizing handles on the table shape to make it smaller, use the Size & Position window to set the exact size. Select the table shape on the drawing page. In the Size & Position window, select the value in the Width field (3 ft. 6 in.) and replace it by typing 1 foot 9 inches, and then press ENTER. Do not use a comma to separate measurement values, such as between feet and inches, or Visio will show an error. You can use a different unit of measure by typing the unit name you want to use. For example, you could type 21 inches or even .583 yard. Select the value in the Height field (6 ft.) and replace it by typing 1 ft. 5 in. The table shape is now an accurate representation of the size of the real table.

When trying to add dbl bi-fold doors in an L shape the y-axis door wont allow me to position it close and keeps snapping down to the centre of the x-axis one. how do I fix this?

Visio is frustratingly bad at making accurate floorplans. Things are constantly auto resizing, displaying units as a mixture of feet and inches instead of just inches, and you have to go 3 menus deep sometimes to edit stuff that should only be 1 menu deep. It's so bad I might as well do everything manually in CAD.

I'm very sorry you think so - please try doing this: Select More Shapes > Visio Extras > Dimensioning-Architectural. Drag a dimension shape onto the drawing page, and place it near the shape you want to measure. Select View > Task Panes > Size & Position. Select a shape. Enter new values for Width or Height. Select a blank area of the drawing page to make the change. Please let me know if it helped. Thanks!
