Drawing architecture has its own challenges. Watch this demo, hear the tips and techniques, and then print the reference from the Community Page and draw it yourself. This drawing took 60 minutes to draw in real-time.

i realize i need to print the reference image to draw it instead of just looking at the screen and try to figure out the angles..

Hmm if you have a tablet or iPad like I do, maybe you can try to flatten the screen on the desk to make it the same angle as your paper! (That is if you don’t have a printer available)

Using a horizon line and 2 Vanishing points works wonders for getting the angles just right.

It’s great to understand the principles with that, but to actually plot it out is usually not practical with VPs way off the paper or drawing on location holding our sketchbook in one arm. 😀

Ahhh this is beautifully done. You're like, self critiquing yourself at the start and I'm sitting here like 'amazing, amazing amazing!!' haha. I love watching the process and how it all comes together with just a simple pen. i have so much trouble with backgrounds in my pictures so I usually just give up and use some fancy brush (procreate) to cheat. We are spoiled with digital art haha. but I really like your method of having the picture next to you and using the pen to measure the dimensions, it seems so simple but something I've never thought of before as I get bogged down in perspective and vanishing points. btw, that area in Sydney is one of my favourite walks! can't beat the old time buildings that are so nicely preserved. great vid :D

I always struggle with perspective drawing while using a vertical image as reference. It's so hard to work with the acute vanishing lines. The distortions increase so fast. Amazing sketch!

Man, I'm so scared to start drawing environments and architecture. I've gotten good at drawing characters over many years, and I've gotten used to being competent at that. Having to be bad at drawing architecture is sure to be a frustrating experience, even with my decent understanding of perspective. Even with being able to watch you do it, the prospect of having to draw that building alone makes me nervous.
@stephentraversart23 күн бұрын
And I have a weakness with figures, because I’ve always been more interested in architecture. But you are able to draw architecture as well as characters, you just have to put the same energy into it. Do t give up. 😀

This is what confuses me, because as for 2 or 3 point perspective I have no problem except for proportion AND compound angles of dormers, overhangs, etc... You start with a photo and you are going to draw it the same SIZE. To me, that is not teaching proportion. What if I want to take an 8x10 photo and make it a 7x9 drawing? Then math comes into play to keep the proportion, and what about angles for roofs, awnings, etc.? A photo may look quite natural because our eyes see it and our brain knows automatically the awning sticks out at a 90 degree angle from the building, but to draw it is what? 35 degrees? If I'm viewing a building in 2-point and the building is at a 30 degree angle on the page, what angle will protrusions of the building be? Thank you so much. Great vid. Awesome drawing. You are very skilled.
@stephentraversart Жыл бұрын
I have a video on drawing roofs in perspective that I think Anders your former etc questions. I use proportion more strictly to mean the height:width:depth ratio, which still has to be correct in same size drawings. But if we are changing the size of our drawing, the angles stay the same as in our reference. The change is out lines get shorter/longer. If there are any protruding elements on the building I find it’s mid point using foreshortening techniques (I have another video on that) and take it back to the VP for the angle. Does this make sense? But try that roof vídeo first, I think it answers a lot of this. Ask me another question after that if you want about it. You’ll sort it out. 😀
