If you use illustrator for fashion design and you need to create a fashion CAD, this is a great fashion design tutorial to learn how to draw fur for a flat sketch. This method is a great addition to designers who need to create a CAD for fashion design.

Do you mean colored fur? I would suggest you recolor each shade of grey fur. You can do this quickly by dragging the fur swatch out of the brushes or pattern panel. Using the Magic Wand, you can select each shade of grey and recolor it to your new color. Then, drag the pattern back into the brushes or pattern panel. For the color, I like to use Global Process or Spot colors. These show a Tint slider in the Color panel when you use them. Makes it simple to create lighter tones.

I have repeated the video over and over again, but I can't get the pattern brush to work properly, it is enormous and there are gaps on the line, as well as it causing illustrator to crash 50% of the time, please help!

Hi, Seb. First, thank you for watching the video and asking your question. Second, brushes are awesome, but they have the potential of creating some issues (including crashing) if they're too complicated. Probably the most effective option is to refine your fur clump before you save it. Try making the "clump" a little less dense. It's adding a bit of texture and interest to the edge of your sketch, and it keeps repeating, so you may not have to have as much fur to still get the same effect. An excessive number of points will also increase your file size and create a lag and potential crash. There is an option under Object (menu) > Path called "Simplify". When you use it, it helps to cut down on the number of points on your objects. Select your clump (and you may want to hide your edges--CTRL/CMND-H--so that it's easier to see what's happening while you do this) and go to Simplify. Make sure preview is on, and using the curve precision and angle threshold, try to get the shape as close as possible to the original with the least amount of points. Underneath the sliders, it will show you the # of original points and the # of current points. Just make sure that you don't slide it so far up that the current points is more than the original. Also, what version of Illustrator are you using? Brushes tend to take up more memory in all versions of Illustrator but later versions do seem to process them much better. And as far as the gaps in your brush, that sounds like an issue with the definition box. If you're dragging your brush into the brushes panel without adding a definition box (a rectangle around the area to be repeated with no fill or stroke color), Illustrator will add one for you, edge to edge of your artwork, once it's placed into the Brushes panel. So you'll end up seeing white spaces between the ends of your brush, where the repeat starts and stops. You can spend time creating a perfect repeat, but since the fur is so random, I normally just make sure that the sides of the definition box fall somewhere on the fur (not on the white space), and it will usually still blend well when you're using the brush. Hope that helps!

Hey! How did you make the brush smaller on 0:46 mark? I'm trying to follow up but have no idea how to reduce the size :(

Hi! Thanks for watching and commenting! You can either double click the tool (I think that's the Symbol Sprayer) and tool options will appear, one of which is to change the size of the cursor OR you can use open or closed brackets ("[) to quickly make your cursor bigger or smaller.
