This is a great lesson, I'm new to this and you were describing the exact approach I intend to use, I'm expecting good success working with pastels, they're very forgiving.

You're right--these still images in sequence are super useful. I feel like I understand the underlayering process much better now. Interesting to hear that you're not using the colour picker tools--glad I don't have to continue to struggle with those! Thank you SO much for this!

Your cheetah is INCREDIBLE!!! So life-like, really masterful. Thank you for sharing this information about blurring the reference in order to lay down tonal values and just get basic colors down is really helpful.

Thank you. This reminds me to slow down and build layers. I have a bad habit of jumping from my under layer to details too quickly. I’m excited to get to the pretty stuff. 😅

Awesome! Now I don't feel so bad at the end of a painting, when I must de-clutter the drawing area from a million pencils, pans, pens, sticks, soft pastels...you get the idea!!! LOL! Yes- I am quite a SLOB when I am working...I think I may even try the full length video of the Cheetah...just because...well because I want to improve!!! Thank You for all the tips!

I learn a lot from videos like this Jason. So how the heck do you decide on the composition of your subject in your drawings? (I am obviously not someone who studied art in school.)

Great explanation. How is your pan pastel tray mounted? Do yo no find lots of dust falls with it mounted vertically? How did you blur your ref? Great tips!
@wildlifeartjm8 ай бұрын
pans - magnet on my board - not much dust ever falls - photoshop - filter - gaussian blur :)

I have watched so many of your videos and found them all very helpful. I have a question about medium....I've seen several animal artists who use drafting film as a medium with great results as far as detail. Have you tried this and what is your opinion? I'm frustrated sometimes b/c the rough texture of Pastelmat makes it difficult to get those clean strokes of hair and fur...and especially whiskers. Thanks, and thank you for sharing your talent and knowledge.

drafting film is for coloured pencils not pastel :)
