Appreciate that you show your technique in each area of the painting. Smart to use chiseled tips rather then pointed tips for this subject’s fur. You’ve certainly conveyed the majesty of the stag.

I'm new to pastels. But I can say that lose track of time when I draw with graphite. My problem is I need to force myself to get up and take a break.

I tend to do the same with my pastel sticks. The powders are so expensive to purchase so I use even wedge makeup sponges and especially my Schminke pastels but they all work. Unison has a nice balance to not fill the tooth. I then enjoy using the pencils but all those medium tones underneath. It certainly goes quickly and the details are fun. I enjoy your tips, even the very inexpensive eye makeup applicators work great and the soft makeup sponges can be rinsed with dish soap and water, bleach dissolves them. Beautiful work on the stag!😊

This is really beautiful! I am returning to doing art for the first time since stopping about 10 years ago and I'm struggling to get started! I'm struggling with techniques and colours right now. My pastels are becoming muddy on the page 😥 I'm thinking of signing up to your patreon to do this piece and try and build confidence again!

So worth watching! The way you explain your process is 'artistic gold'! Especially enjoy the real time demonstration. Also love your website! Very easy to navigate. Do you also have tutorials in oils? It's referenced in one of the tiers...Thank you for sharing!

Hi there, thank you very much, I really appreciate it! My website has taken me longer than it should to create so I'm super pleased you like it :) There are a few basic videos in oils - my Patreon is predominantly soft pastel, I'm hoping to come out with oils and graphite tutorials soon though!

Hi Shaymus, I am a returning Patreon member (had to stop for 2 months) and I want to say that your skill level is doubling from month to month. Your Lynx and tiger pieces are breathtaking! You are very meticulous in drawing the fur and even though they are just lines drawn on a 2 dimensional surface, it seems like I can reach out and feel the velvety texture of the deer's fur. I find that VERY interesting and something to be studied. You do this on Pastelmat whereas other pastel artists require velour papers to achieve similar results, and yet, they still don't get the clarity and fine detail that Pastelmat yields. I notice that when creating fur, you seem to be using chiseled edged pencils more and more instead of your usual pointed lead pencils. Why is this? What are the benefits of a chiseled edge lead over a pointed lead pencil?

Hi Derek, thank you for your wonderful comment & supporting me over on Patreon, I really appreciate it! When I sharpen my pastel pencils on 2 sides to get that chiselled shape, the lines are much sharper. I find this allows me to draw in more detail and helps to draw the individual hair shapes easier. With this drawing being 50x70cm's there is quite a lot of room to draw in detail so I don't necessarily need them to be very sharp, but sharpening this way does allow me to draw lines for the hair that can flick off into different directions slightly etc for that realistic appearance. Its not much extra work, I just sharpen this way instead of the traditional point, I also find that the chiselled sharpening stays sharper for longer when drawing fur too. I hope this helps!

@@shaymusart Yes it does help. After watching your video, I actually tried sharpening my pencils to a chiseled shape and I found the exact same thing - thinner, more controllable lines and I can maintain the sharp edge longer by flipping the pencil from side to side. One last question, have you used Pan Pastels and how do you compare them to soft pastel sticks?

Hi Shamus, I just found you on you tube and love your art, I like to sign up with Patreon, do your tutorials come with line art?
@shaymusart
@shaymusart 11 ай бұрын
Hi there, thank you very much! I don't offer line art with my tutorials unfortunately - this tutorial in particular will show you how to get the 50x70cm's accurate outlines for the 50x70cm pastelmat paper for you to draw alongside me if you wish to. I find that line art can be quite limiting so I try to avoid it.

Hi, are you now doing tutorials that you talk through with tips and colour guides, as I done the leopand and there was no talk through with that, if you are now doing talk throughs, i will consider coming back to your patreon.
@shaymusart
@shaymusart 11 ай бұрын
Hi there, yes all tutorials are voiced over with instruction, including this one. The clips in this video are compiled directly from the 10-hour voiced-over tutorial that's now available on my Patreon. The Leopard one was a little different in that it was a sped up tutorial at the start and then a long real-time video with no voice over at the end combined into one video - this was the first 'tutorial' I produced for Patreon and stopped following this set up. Voiced over tutorials & non-voiced over real-time videos are now separate in different tiers. I hope this helps!

I've heard the same argument used for abstract art...that it's a mess being passed off as art. Art is whatever you -and- or I believe it is.
