As someone who is studying the art of horror as well a great tip I can give is, use grose texture, this can be wet, sticky, wrinkly and more. A grose and convincing texture is something the viewer can almost feel, so that can really help with giving your drawings an uncomfortable feel. (The more in-depth the groser it can feel, like in the snake drawing if you draw the veins and really show the skin being stretched it can feel all the more real and disturbing)

I think that if the jacket was darker on the first one it would help the drawing pop. And it being a worm not a snake would ick me more

I think something crucial for horror that you're missing is the concept of specificity, primarily narrative specificity. A particularly horrifying manga panel will materialize the plot points or fears that have been building up all chapter or even across many chapters. And these fears are not just generic, they are extremely specific. We've all seen so many creepy body distortions or murder dolls or whatnot that most horror elements on their own as a single image lose their edge unless they are backed by a strong narrative. Both of your drawings in this video seem to be too focused on just showing something creepy for the sake of creepiness, but neither composition gives clues to a full story about why this creepy manifestation has emerged or what it is doing. That said, I really did like this video and how you were so vulnerable with us about where you are in your learning stages with horror. But uh yeah, specificity. A weirdass looking doll holding a knife? Not very specific, we've seen it so much that it ties to narratives from outside one's work unless we as viewers have new narrative details to anchor it back to to the story and to create a new sense of unease. A weirdass looking doll wearing a mcdonalds crewshirt and hat and stuffed in it's mouth are copies of every single fricking receipt from every single frickin time you ordered something from mcdonalds, and the receipts are just oozing and spilling out like guts with somewhat legible text, and on some of them the employee even tried to write creepy love notes? That is so much more specific and taps into the soul of horror so much more (especially if we as readers have seen you or the character casually make multiple mcdonalds orders before in the story). Just a random comment from someone who will hopefully be competing with you on Manga Plus Creators later this year :)

I think the context of the stories adds to Junji Itos work. Confusion and something being unknown makes it far creepier than just the image. Also expression. It’s not good enough to just be horrified, it also usually has a sense of human instinct to inspect the body horror, pulling at your face or touch, the body language goes a long way. I think personally mood lighting will make something more scary due to shapes being distorted by light.

I liked the snake drawing I would have never thought of making the snake deform the skin but it makes sense that it does. The second one is good too the fluffy body can make it look harmless so the creepy face can impact with a jumpscare kinda reveal

Horror is tricky because it is per the experiences of the person. You have the tools you have the understanding but I think it’s going to take some vulnerability from you to find that hell in your soul that you avoid. It’s a juxtaposition of what brings you joy and makes you feel safe. Everyone is low key afraid of things and people approaching them that aren’t people or things you feel safe with. Sometimes it takes more time to figure out that terror in you and observe it like you doing a life drawing. A lot of people I grew up around were afraid of clowns, but there were things that happened in my church I grew up around that was scary.

I wholly agree with you about Ito-sensei, while i occasionally like creepy stuff, Ito-senseis stories are just downright unsettling and disturbing. It both fascinates and terrifies me, so i do feel the guy is the pinnacle of horror manga. Also, best of luck in implementing your studies into your own projects in the future, thinking of checking out your manga at some point myself btw.

If you ever want to improve what you've drawn, here's some advice: 13:57 : What's wrong here is the focus. In context to the illustration, the little girl is in the presence of the monster. So the monster's face area and her neck should be in white as her body fades into the background. The little girl would have the her upper body in white and have a gradient from her bust down to match the floor value. Which should be a dark gray value to make the white pop more. Basically, reverse what's in white; reverse what's the focus. Another thing is the monster's face. It's too safe. Yes, it's off-putting to have a face on a long neck but Junji Ito does more than screw with anatomy. He caricaturizes it to the extreme. This is an easy fix: exaggerate her eye shape to the point it looks like the happy opera mask; then make her nose super small as it's swallowed up by the wrinkles of her smile; then exaggerate her smile. Make it too wide for her face as she's showing off her gums and her mangled, uneven teeth that are too long to be human. Other than that, fundamentally, this is a good illustration. What's messing is the intentions of the white contrast and not pushing the anatomy of the monster far enough.

one thing I noticed from junji ito's drawings is that he draws the horror subject more detailed than the character's and and that makes our brains subconsciously put our self in the place of the character and imagine if it was us instead of the character and in my eponion aside from the nightmarefule aspect of the horror subject its one of the more important things of his drawings

I would recommend adding a focus point then make something in the background seem a little bit off, that way, the focus point would distract the viewer while their subconscious picks up on the background, giving you the feeling that something is off, but you can't quite put your finger on it

I think when drawing these kinds of characters and creatures its easy to feel a lack of confidence, since what you are drawing is highly unusual and supernatural. The second one is a perfect example of this: the large creature is an unnatural and unusual design, but thats ok. Sometimes your imagination does things like this. Ito has spent years in this industry, and has probably had the same feelings before, but i think once you get the hang of drawing things that are very unnatural itll become easier, but it just takes patience and dedication.

hey, I'm pretty desperate for this one at the moment since I'm trying to develop some sort of car related manga (at least a lil one shot for the media at some point in the future) thing is I'm not really sure about how to go about shading cars at all or how to really go about some parts of cars. The main concept of the one shot is going to be Hill Climb cars taken to car meets, drag races, maybe even to the mountain passes and highways of Japan. I, an aspiring car enthusiast-artist would of course look up to Shuichi Shigeno. I adore his style of drawing and it's really beautiful I just can't really ever figure out how he gets some of the action lines or shading down. I was hoping that you could at any point in time do an art study of him :D whether it's from MF Ghost or Initial D manga, either works since both do have enough to get the basic gist of it. I'm really just asking for the help and for others who might be searching for something similar out there. Would really appreciate it if you could do it in the future. Thanks for reading this if you have (goes to anyone) :)

I don’t think it’s your art skills that need work. Junji Ito makes art I don’t want to look at and yet I’m compelled. Try asking yourself why you’re afraid of snakes what about them gives you the “ick”. Is it the scaliness of their skin? Draw someone peeling scales off their skin. Is it their teeth? Perhaps make a snake creature with teeth all around it. Perhaps a person has snake teeth erupting from inside of them.

Hey, I have a little bit off-topic question: have you noticed screentone "flickering" (like, it's making some ugly-ass patterns that were not there before the export)? I suppose it happens because of how pixels on our screens work, so when you're zooming in or out it breaks the initial pattern. But is there a way to fix that? I've noticed that you're using solid grays rather than screentone and I know that it can work as a good screentone replacement, but maybe you have heard of something that can fix the flickering?
