i love these books so much - they were so useful, not not just for drawing comics i used them as portion references for when i was drafting doll patterns, and i STILL use my Costume Encyclopedias, Graphic-sha 32, 33, and 34, in designing clothes and characters
@VigasArtRoom3 жыл бұрын
I never would have thought of them used for that! BJDs or OOAK dolls?

I'm not a weeb (like seriously, anime and manga is just blank in my mind), but I was definitely in the generation that saw the how to draw boom explode in my book shops. I even have a few of the non-manga how to draw books. So I clicked this for your hilarious take on them. And here's a scary note: one of these how to draw manga books is in my university library.

By scary, I mean it was one that was just cashing in.

as someone who has no drawing experience and is obsessed with the 2000s anime art style I'm gonna buy volume 8 how to Draw since it looks close to the later 2000s anime

This was after my time. However, Blackthorne did publish a comic format (as in the size, not the style) series of books on How To Draw Robotech, which is basically the way Tatsunuko drew their characters at the time. I have a couple of issues but outside of one piece I did for a video I don't usually use them. Manga style is not something I ever got used to.

These books defined my high school years. I even brought a couple to read and draw from backstage at my choir show.

I was given a lot of the Chris Hart how to draw books when I was a teen. I loved them until I learned he was a hack though. Also found the super deform pose series online and it is a great reference for chibi style characters. I’ve also been considering Pop Manga. Is it any good?
@VigasArtRoom3 жыл бұрын
I don't know Pop Manga.

I miss Borders too lol! I don't think I've ever tried to draw manga even though I was very into anime in my younger years, oh wait, I just remembered that I used to draw my alien OC's in two styles, one was super cartoony and the other semi-manga style lol, I had no clue what I was doing 😂😂

Good video! Last year I revisited these books. I had the first one as a kid but didn't find it helpful, then many years later found a bulk set on ebay and bought about 8! I shortly resold them as I found the same problem as you say in this vid (hugely outdated). I did keep 2: 'Mecha Drawing' & 'Giant Robots', because mechas and giant robots! I'm glad I did, since your vid has given me a new perspective on them: they are reference books. I expected to learn techniques (which I didn't) but they have some really good ideas on where to get inspiration from, and lots of examples.

I sold my mecha book and now I wish I still had it. I kinda want a full collection out of nostalgia and archival reasons. I'm an oldtaku. 😂 I'm glad I was able to show another perspective on them. I'm so happy!

even though i somehow managed to dodge these books as a kid i actually bought one of these at a thrift store a few months ago?? 😂 i really just wanted the anatomy tips it had since my own weeb-inspired style is already pretty set in stone--the book isn't useful for learning an anime style at all lol. anyway love the video! :)
