My highschool art teacher used to put me down and criticize my life drawing saying" it looked to much like anime". My fashion illustration teacher told me to lean into it and develop my style further because it made my illustrations stand out. I'll leave you to guess who motivated me to keep drawing. Really enjoying the retrospectives💜

I too was one kid who got this book and the sequel, and I still have them to this day, I'm hoping to pick up the skill yet again and I plan on using these 2 & more. So wish me luck.

The part where Scomicmaker talks about teaching younger kids and seeing how much of a perfectionist they are at so young of an age, it honestly reminded me of a documentary on youtube that I watched about how the original powerpuff girls were made and a little bit about Craig McCracken's life when he was a kid. Craig had mentioned that he loved drawing when he was a kid. But there was a problem. He would get so upset and was so much a perfectionist at around 5 or 6 because his drawings weren't turning out the way he saw the images in his head. He didn't have the skills required of how creative his mind was. So, his father would tell him what he was trying to draw and draw it for him. He loved it. It was exactly the way he always saw it in his head. But unfortunately, his father passed away when he was only 8 years old. After his father's passing, he improved his drawing skills and worked really hard and eventually, after going to Cal Arts, developed his own drawing style that everybody knows and loves. I think if it weren't for Craig's father encouraging him to draw and helping him draw his ideas, I don't any of his shows would have existed today.

My art teacher straight up banned anime, she was like "NO ANIME" and anytime I did draw it she would mark my grade down a bit. *Witch Hat Atelier is fucking god tier indeed.*

Honestly watching these vids has been pretty nostalgic because I had a lot of these books as a teen and... its really surreal to even acknowledge that because these days I draw late 80s/ early 90s western influence anthro animals (think something like Tiny Toon Adventures). I literally don't know how I went from tender baby weeb to boomer furry but it happened and I can't say I regret the journey like.. as much as things have changed oh so very much I still use a few little technique here and there I originally picked up from how to draw manga type books including one of Katy Coope's.

KT's books were my first and I still feel some nostalgia for them. I never owned the blue one (borrowed from a friend and/or the library through grades 7-9) but I did have the red one. I think it's still in my basement actually. I still have my very first manga-style drawing I did in 7th grade because I never throw anything out lol. I love this series so much!

Good job covering this. I actually participated this meme since I too have the sequel book as my first book to draw back in middle school along with the original a few years later. These books really what got me into using colored pencils and inking with extra fine sharpie markers for years since they're the only tools around the house every new school year. Seeing KT Coope finally participate was satisfying and wholesome.

I like how he's taking what he did at 16 in stride (according to the quotes here) and not going on about how terrible it is and being sorry it exists. Nobody's work at 16 looks as good as what they did in their twenties and thirties. I know my stuff didn't.

This was such a wholesome dive into the KT book! I was so ready to regret that part of my part, and now I'm accepting it wholesale. Keep on drawing, y'all! Don't give up!!

I had several time used the B&W inner versions of Jump covers to try and get better at drawing through tracing. I you want to know I got them, Kinokuniya has a shop in my Area and i would buy the volumes there. On that front If the artist themselves think that is a good idea to try and do for practice only then It should work for me. I would not attempt to sell the finished practice as finished art. Looking at you Greg Land on that one.

The only bad thing I'd say about these books is that it may distract people from getting material for the fundamentals of art, especially children who are more interested in flashy big eyed characters instead of boring muscly men and fruits drawn in graphite on the covers

How many takes did you do to pour No Emotion juice on yourself and what did you used for No emotion juice?
