How would you do this if you were trying to lay out a 36" star? What would you use for the compass?

Take any two flat strips and joint them with nut bolt at the end. then fix a steel nail on end of one strip and fix marker on the end of other strip. your huge compass is ready. May be I'll create video on making a large compass yourself.
