Is there a possibility to only zigzag the bottom? Seeing as some skirts are like the 'underskirt' in your drawing, that don't have an 'overskirt' over it.

Yes just do the same method then expand the appearance - Object > Expand - so you can work with it and join the sides.

this seems to be a great tutorial! But, i cannot make the clipping mask for some reason! When i choose the clipping mask option, (command 7), a note keeps popping up saying "you need to select more than one object to make a clipping mask". Please help me!! I need this for my project assignment...!!
