Wonderful tutorial! Watching you prepare to add the whiskers had me feeling slightly anxious! By laying the piece flat and using your body to create momentum as opposed to your wrist, makes a lot of sense! Being a perfectionist can be a detriment at times, but look at the end result! Amazing!

Your art, your works are just so amazing. I was wondering, are you using Panpastel? I dont recall any video where you would mention, but based on how you applied the base here, just wondered, what is your opinion on Panpastels?
@shaymusart8 ай бұрын
Hi there, no I don’t use PanPastel - I have nothing against them though, it’s just personal preference. I suppose my method for applying my pastel sticks in this video is very similar to how Panpastels work. Soft pastel stick brands offer a lot more variety in colour which is my main reason for choosing them over Panpastels. Also, it’s quite easy to pick up too much pigment with Panpastels as they are so pigmented, this can fill in the tooth of the paper too quickly, making it hard for pencil details to go on top. Hope this helps!

Love your stuff, very good explenations in your videos. Quick question: when using pastelmat, can u sketch the outline using graphite or do you go for pastel for that?
@shaymusart7 ай бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate it 😊 you can use graphite but it’s hard to see unless you’re working on a light colour / white pastelmat. Graphite can also leave marks visable on the final outcome too where the pastel has a hard time adhearing to it.

Shaymus, what is your opinion of Pan Pastels? Do you find stick pastels better than Pan Pastels? (I am asking because the way you are applying the stick pastels in this video is similar to the way Pan Pastels are applied, so I am wondering why you do not use those instead. I have a large set of Pan Pastels, but will consider buying stick pastels if you think they are better for realistic animal portraits.)

Hi Derek, I’ve answered a very similar question in the comments which I will repost here: “no I don’t use PanPastel - I have nothing against them though, it’s just personal preference. I suppose my method for applying my pastel sticks in this video is very similar to how Panpastels work. Soft pastel stick brands offer a lot more variety in colour which is my main reason for choosing them over Panpastels. Also, it’s quite easy to pick up too much pigment with Panpastels as they are so pigmented, this can fill in the tooth of the paper too quickly, making it hard for pencil details to go on top.“ I think using both pan pastels and normal pastels will work quite well if you already have a large collection 😊

YOUR PHOTO or someone else that you traced from . You may be great but how well would you do in a court of law, and have to do without a tracing/ transfer and just a LIVE DOG or puppy,? This dose not really teach . It Cheapens anyone who REALLY Know the concept of the skull of a dog or cat or wild animal.

Why does it bother you so much? He's done a fantastic rendering of that PHOTO, draw a circle and see how well most people would create a realistic apple... Many of the greats used tracing to create the most iconic pieces of art history. We should praise each other as artists not berate. Best take a look in the mirror and figure out why that big fat ego and your jealousy needs to make themselves feel better 👍
