What are your top tips for staying cool in hot weather?
@bludog46572 жыл бұрын
When June and July rolls around I will sometimes wet a banana and wear it on my head under the helmet.
@grumpynerd2 жыл бұрын
Where I live temperatures can exceed 35C/95F. The key to staying comfortable is becoming acclimated, a process that takes a week or more during which you need to take it easy as you get accustomed to exercising in the heat. Your body will begin sweat a lot more and you'll be surprisingly comfortable while riding, although when you stop it'll feel like you've been dropped in an oven. You lose a lot of fluids, so I sometimes carry up to 2 liters of water. It's dangerous to drink that much plain water, so I use a commercial electrolyte powder; I also carry salt pills just in case. Eating also helps keep electrolyte levels up. My general rule of thumb is that as long as you can keep yourself feeling good on the bike, you're safe. If you feel uncomfortable riding you need to back off. As cyclists we tend to push through discomfort, but if you do that with heat you're asking for heat exhaustion. You may suddenly feel the heat inexplicably disappear; that's a sign of heat stroke, which is a medical emergency.

Did the 2021 Festive 500 where every day was over 40C, and the only day to get through that was starting before dawn, watching the sunrise with a coffee, and being done and indoors again before 9am at which point it was just in the low 30s. Selecting a time of day when the sun is lower on the horizon (both ends of the day) has a lower UV index, and use the middle of the day to see something new so ride there in the morning, and ride back in the afternoon. There are also good long sleeve summer jerseys that have a UPF rating that'll stop the sunburn (e.g., Bellweather Sol-Air).

Summer is my worst enemy for cycling. For example I went to the Gran Fondo Nove Colli last weekend, from 6am to 11am the temperature was great so the first 100km I did manage my tempo and body temperature, the hell came around 12pm when the temperatures reached around 34-36c, had to slown down or I might faint due to the high temperatures (and humidity too). On jersey colour: There is a scientific concept called Albedo, which is all about how much heat different colours can absorb. It is on a scale out of 1. The closer to 1, the more the colour can reflect sunlight and vice-versa. Black has been show to have an Albedo of close to zero, while white on the other hand, has an Albedo of about 0.9. The brighter the colour, the higher the Albedo, so 10/10 I'd go for a brighter jersey in the heat. Also better for road safety.
