I believe the most untapped market in fashion is with plus size. Designers are offering tent dresses and leggings to plus size women. There are many things I want to buy, but no one produces them in plus sizes.

The plus size course is no longer available :( I'm 165cm and a neat UK 14 on the bottom, a 14-16 on top. I used to be a UK 8-10 but my life changed and put on weight which for various reasons is not easy to lose. I find it so much more difficult to look chic now. It is easy to look chic when you are slim, not so easy when you are plus size. Also what works for somebody with large hips and a small bust may not work for somebody with a large bust and smaller hips or somebody who is big all over. This is why manufacturers make shapeless things, not all plus size is the same.

It is so true and frustrating plus size clothes are guady. Often time designers make clothes for woman that are always short. I am 5'10 and all slacks, skirts, and dresses are short. I wear a size 18 and I am 58 years old and am fed up with trying to buy chic well fitted classics.

I have similar issues - I am 6 feet and size 18 - ihav a hard time finding clothes long enough. I need regular clothes just bigger and longer. I will love the style tips as I dress in classic style. I also find being able to tailor clothes to be an asset too.

I cannot wait to see your course for plus size women. Your sense of style is what I need to create my French chic wardrobe. I live in states but my soul will be always in France( not a French woman by birth but by my spirit I am one😍🇫🇷). I am not exactly plus size, kinda in between, my weight has been fluctuating over the past 15 years, I was size 8-10, now more like a solid 14 (in US sizes). I have been interested in style for my whole life, and I used to wear a lot of chic clothes. Living in the USA for the past 15 years and wearing medical uniform every day put me in a tough position when I am struggling to find my style again. Would be so great to see your videos, Marie-Anne! Thank you!

@Loribyn
@Loribyn 5 жыл бұрын
What?! No we don't! I've been 'plus size' all my life and I've never had trouble finding quality clothing to fit, and that matches my personal style, which is indeed 'French Chic' (and I wouldn't be caught dead in leggings! Don't even own a pair, but I'm obviously not running around naked and scaring the wallabies!). But you may have to pay a bit extra (but then, you will for quality regardless). I predominantly shop at Myer's (for tees and jeans, underwear, and basic department-store items; and at their various boutique counters for the better-quality wardrobe staples). Now that said, our pret-a-porter market-availability would depend on how big one is (and in what way/s), and if one is actually a plus-size, or is in fact a _super_ size (which is size 20 and over; while 'plus' is properly just 14 to 18, and _most_ brands go up to this, including the good design houses. It's the super sizes that regular brands don't carry [unless you go couture/bespoke and then they'll make whatever size you want]). My sister is a super-size and I know what trouble she has with pret-a-porter (but then, she's cheap and won't spend the money to buy anything decent. She buys veritable mountains of crap at Target, Kmart, and 'factory outlets', spending a lot more in the end than I do, and wonders why she looks like something the cat dragged in!); but I have found our plus-size range generally excellent, and in which sizes all the best international brands are readily available, along with our good local brands. But again, in tailoring terms, super-sizes are *not* plus-sizes -- they're different (and I can't speak to the availability of super sizes. They're obviously there - my sister is clothed - but I wouldn't call what she buys quality clothing. Perhaps it's _good_ super-sizes that are lacking...? I don't know). If you really can't find anything you love, then find yourself a great tailor/dressmaker instead (or become that for yourself), and be prepared to spend the money that quality clothing is worth. For example, good wool trousers:- a quality worsted wool is going to cost a minimum of $60~80 a metre, so you won't find a pair of wool trousers for less than _several_ hundred, and you shouldn't expect to (a wool blend will bring down the price, but they'll still be $250+). The same is true of a quality jacket/blazer (which will be quite a lot more than a pair of trousers); and so on. And remember that if you are in fact a super-size, as opposed to plus, a garment has to be re-engineered from a standard size, not just made bigger, so that too will add to the price; as will the extra fabric requirement, just as is true of plus sizes (but plus sizes don't need to be redesigned from standard, which is why most brands will carry them ~ because the proportions are the same as standard sizes, just larger/longer/broader; something not so of super-sizes).
@susie9893
@susie9893 5 жыл бұрын
@@Loribyn some excellent points but I have to disagree with you about quality. I've found it increasingly difficult in recent (eg.5) years to find quality plus size items (yes, at DJs and Meyer - just feels like they're expecting more $ for less quality). Happily, I've lost a lot of weight recently so I'm a lot less plus size than I used to be (but finding this quality issue seems to be across the board - however I'm starting to discover the joys of thrifting in terms of quality items - think vintage). I like what you said about getting your own clothes made, I'm starting to look into sewing and altering my own clothes - that way I can tailor to my own body and use materials I like.
@Loribyn
@Loribyn 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply@@susie9893 Having thought more about it, you're probably both right -- I haven't bought anything in years because I just don't need anything, so I admit there could have been a change in that time (to which I naturally can't speak). If it has become as you say, you have the right idea (with vintage stores) -- and I'll stick with my tailor ... me! ;)

Dear Marie-Anne, re-watching all your videos, and re-reading your books is keeping me sane in the hell that the San Francisco area has become these last two weeks! We are surrounded by wildfires, the smoke is unbelievable and unbearable, we are having a terrible heat wave, are under advisement to start emergency evacuation packing, and have to limit power use to prevent blackouts! There was already one, accidental power outage, on the hottest day. Unlike most coastal Californians, fortunately I have two rooms with window air conditioners, but have been stuck in them for 2 weeks. Everything outside and even inside is covered with ash - we were caught unaware, with windows and doors open, the night of the first fire. Our usual heat wave refuges, cinemas, restaurants, indoor shopping malls, etc., are, of course, closed because COVID is very bad here also. I have a special folder on KZbin with all your videos in it, and am going through them again!

Hi Dee, I've shared this elsewhere on a feed for this channel but I guess it bears repeating. A very wise plus size friend of mine once said that style has nothing to do with size. Being smaller won't suddenly endow you with style. Style comes from knowing yourself and having confidence to express who you are in how you dress.

thank you,,, I will try to find your commments more often,,,!!! I have not found anyone who has given such excellent advice even for a plus size! I have seen many women mostly from American who are plus size and wow, they stand out as if they have a sign on them declaring they are from the states! I know most Europeans do not have the size issues we have in the states but really! Large women have a reputation for being over the top so to speak, which is not so in my case. And if I see one more frech berrita I am going to throw up! Once while traveling during the 80s I sent all my Amercans clothes how and just shopped the second hand stores in Paris until I could assemble a very simple yet stylish set of outfits! I still have a coat from then which I have kept in great shape as it was expensive, and now is a collectors piece!!! Again, thank you! Oh I remember going into a shope, Bon Marche, my husband who spoke french at the time asked the sales lady where would I find my size in tights, a simple black tights? She replied: Why sir we do not make them in that large of a size!! Without missing a beat, he smiled rather sarcastically and retored: Why Madam, then what store do you purchase yours in then???? As she was about my plus size!

Why do shirts and blouses, t-shirts, linen, whatever, for women , have pockets on the chest? I’m large busted. I need to distract, not draw attention. That said, I don’t know why any woman would want chest pockets. We aren’t going to put a hanky there, or carry cigarettes there (heaven forbid), or money, or anything! Depending on the size of the woman, the placement can be very strange! It doesn’t seem to matter where I shop for a simple collared shirt, or t-shirt, there is at least 11 if not 2 pockets.

I think it’s possible to be plus sized and wear a mini dress. But it’ll look better if you find a cut that suits your body type.

Hmm, I think it's something you can get away with when you're young. But once the cellulite sets in you'll be rethinking that idea believe me. ALTHO, I've seen some older plus size women who are all tummy/torso (no, definitely not pregnant) and have GREAT legs. Women like that COULD wear minis and shorts but proportionally a different style might be recommended to elongate them (that's not my figure type so I can't really comment on that but I'm guessing that a mini would MAKE them look pregnant in that it would emphasise their tummy - really need to draw the eye down, maybe a mini but really chunky boots might work)

I just had a quick look at your e books for plus size. I will get it after visiting my sick (cancer) sister. When younger I had a rectangular shape, but after many years of little exercise after a now repaired back injury I am apple shape. I am guessing I buy the apple shape e book, but not sure?

I am a plus size with an hourglass shape the most important thing for me and dressing is not to have anything hit me at the hip. I am 510 160 pounds a US 12 UK 16 46 Italian. 38-30-41. Not a true plus size but almost Pants are the most difficult because to fit at the hip the waste is always huge and I have to tailor. I would love to know some other designers that fit a bigger girl like me Ralph Lauren and Peruvian connection are my two standbys here in the states

A good tailor is your best friend and work that waist with a belt. @Leslie Craven with your height you are not plus size and @9 inch nails through each one of my eyelids your shape is so on trend. Dress classy, not sexy.

Yes, after 40+ years I've finally given up the ideal of finding clothes that fit properly. If it fits my hips and makes my butt look good then the waist can be taken in (I remember the clothing disasters of my teens when I'd buy jeans to fit my waist 😯😖)

Plus size designers assume that because I'm a 14, it means that I have enormous breasts. Even the models they use are busty. Every dress has to be altered so I don't look like I'm playing dress up in mommy's closet.

North American plus sized clothing is, almost without exception, horrible. Garish colour combinations, carnival-style prints, badly fitting, pattern mismatched or frumpy-looking plain, dark, sombre, poorly trimmed black or navy. It is VERY difficult to find anything to wear at all, let alone anything even remotely stylish, especially if you are a woman "of a certain age." Not even the best design houses seem to want to create anything for plus sized women.

Plus size men and women can try to dress French chic but they’ll never fully pull it off. Part of dressing chic is the size. Size 2, to be exact. We can try to pull it off but we’ll always be disappointed in the overall look. 😭🤷‍♀️

@@MarieAnneLecoeur well, you would know better than me. I still find that it's not quite 'IT' when someone (me) is trying to pull off french chic when they are beyond a certain size. It's like playing dress up 🤷🏻‍♀️. I'll settle for just looking 'nice'. Love your videos though!

@@MarieAnneLecoeur thank you for saying this! I think too many plus sized women get so demoralised by how they look and especially how others tell them they look and then they get depressed and find it even harder to lose weight and virtually impossible to feel good about themselves. And often it isn't even their fault they gained weight - often it's a hormone thing (and education about diet in the West is extremely dodgy). I know, I've been there. So I always try to encourage others to be happy in their own skin. And to be grateful for their bodies - your body is what gets you where you're going.

@@reflectivewomanSD I think possibly they tried to pull off their interpretation of French chique? Perhaps they copied a look from a French designer or something on Instagram?? This is not the essence of French chique. French chique is knowing how best to enhance YOUR body and wearing classic styles to do so. Really the principles could've been DESIGNED for a plus-sized woman eg. keep it simple, less is more - we all know that simpler cuts and patterns/textiles suit a larger woman better
