How To Drill A Doorknob Hole

Here is how to drill a hole for a doorknob. It can be tricky lining up the doorknob hole with the hole in the door sill, so the sure way to get the doorknob hole drilled in the right place is to use a doorknob hole drilling template like the Ryobi Wood Door Lock Installation Kit. Thanks for the reply and interesting video that you shared which has helped alot of people. I am somewhat skilled but not enough or have the tools and equipment to install two deadbolts. And so my friend who is experienced will do this job for me. I also have no chisels but he does to do the finishing chisel work on my doors.

For the metal doors I tried the a few cheapo kits but the hole saw not carbide. Only the masterforce brand from menards was solid. But in a week I broke 3 pilot bits. Most residential metal doors dont have wood blocks or theres only partial blocks. Sucks because the 1/4 bit has no solid hold and suddenly takes off and breaks the bit ripping a GOUGE. So i had to reverse the drill. Useing half inch drill with side handel. Any help please.

It should work the same on a fence. You just want to make sure you’re not drilling into a knot.

Yes. It should work with any door lock that requires a round hole.

"Hole Drillers" LOL!!.... sorry made me laugh. They are called Hole Saws. Even the small one that looks like a drill bit then widens right at the end, just a different type whole saw. Great video though, just what i was looking for, thanks!!!

I don't remember which size I used, but the kit came with a few different sizes. I used the one recommended for the doorknob I had. Before you drill the hole, check the instructions that came with the doorknob, or if it came out of an old door, measure the hole.

You could have saved money by just using a piece of paper and pencil to locate the placement of the door holes. Simply take out a door knob from another door and make your own template. Then go and buy a 1" paddle bit or like I'm going to do just use a router. I mean, how often are you going to use that kit anyway? Probably never again.

I am not sure if you mentioned in the video about using safety equipment before starting a job like this. Gloves, safety glasses, ear plugs or muffs and (if needed) a dust mask will make the job safer and better.

No need for the ear plugs as the noise level is low . You would only use those for something like an angle grinder. Also no need for safety glasses their is only very minor woodwork dust which is harmless. Dont let the Safety Nazis misinform you.
