Did this successfully today. I have done it with relative success in past but your two tips really helped. Marking the lock with magic marker so you know where to work is key. Then using a dremel to file down the strike plate is huge time saver. I used a file in the past but the dremel makes short work of it. Thanks mang!

Good idea. One can also remove the striker plate. Pound a match stick in the screw holes. Screw the striker plate back on placing the screws in the 3, 6, 9 or 12 clock position, between the match plug & old screw hole. Depending which way you need to move the plate 1/16 inch. Right, down, left or up. 😊

In this case I might be inclined to agree with your husband. The door likely has a weatherstripping trim that should be compressed to work well. If you grind out the latch plate then the door won't compress the weatherstripping will not be as effective

I did customer service for many years with a large construction company. I figured out that message many years ago by marking the bolt with white caulking then letting the boat hit the striker plate and then trimming the striker plate appropriately. In some cases I actually had to remove the striker plate and trim the wood behind it and then put the striker plate back but I always got it to work smoothly.

I used the bacon grease on my deadbolt and it slides even smoother😜 Before Dremels we used to put the ball end of a ball peen hammer against the strike plate and wallop the flat face with a rubber mallet and it would open up the hole so the dead bolt fit looser.

@@MrKnowItAllGuru Another thing to try is, turning the plunger in and out while pressing in against the door, pulling the door handle toward you, pulling the door handle up and pushing the door handle down. If one of those exercises eliminates the plunger rubbing, you will know where it's rubbing. Example: Pulling up on the door handle allows the plunger to flow smoothly - Therefore the plunger/frame plate is impacting at the bottom of the plunger/wall plate.

Those burrs come in many shapes and sizes, also bits especially made for aluminum (coarse don't clog) as well. I don't have a Dremel and those burrs take metal off very fast. Usually used in an air operated die grinder but since i didn't have it or a compressor at her house, the drill worked fine.

In regards to baking bacon: place the bacon on a wire rack (cookie cooling rack or similar) and then place the rack on a foil lined pan to make clean up easy. By placing the bacon on a wire rack instead, the bacon grease drips down onto the foil, making the bacon tastier and crispier than if it had lied in its own grease. If you want to make the bacon really crispy, sprinkle kosher salt over the bacon before baking it; the more salt on the bacon, the crispier the bacon.

To fill the old screw hole try drilling it out with a 1/4" drill bit then tapping in a 1/4" dowel with wood glue and levelling it smooth when dry. You can now carefully drill your new hole without the bit slipping into the old hole.

@@Marcoosianism oh it wasn't so much the bit wanting to go back to the old holes as the screws themselves. The wood of the frame had been cut in a really poor way to create the hole for the lock's bolt (looked like someone missed their mark and decided to use a chisel instead) so even after plugging the old holes the screws would either burst out into the hole for the bolt, or would push the plugs enough to wiggle. Replacing part of the frame was something we considered, but everyone else was dithering about it so I got fed up with it and went to the hardware and fixed it up the best way that I could 😅

Here's another quick tip: if you DO decide that you want to move the holes slightly left or right, you can just take some matchsticks, cut off the heads then jam, hammer to seat or break them off into the holes that were drilled. then fill with wood glue from a dropper. Now you can drill without worrying about cracking, splitting or the drill bit walking back in and following the original hole.

Best way to do bacon in oven, do want you did for prep, put it in a cold oven. Set your oven to 400 degrees, once it hits 400 watch it close, it takes 2-4 minutes and your done.

Tap a wooden golf tee into the existing holes then break or cut it off then you can make new holes with a drill without it wanting to go over into the original holes...if you grind off too much "meat" from the plate it would be too thin to survive a kick...

That bacon will taste great with a little cracked black pepper and powdered maple sugar sprinkled on BEFORE you bake it.

Reference bacon: At 450 deg. bacon splatters - keep the oven at 400 deg. & it doesn't splatter.

You can see that the piece sticking out is drooping and it's not coming out bone straight from the. Why not fix the drooping metal lock rather than grinding out the hole where the lot goes?
@MrKnowItAllGuru Жыл бұрын
You can do this fix any way you want to Lynda, we are just sharing what we know works. Thanks. Guru Mike

Bacon still spatters, but it goes inside your oven which is way harder to clean.
@MrKnowItAllGuru2 күн бұрын
We'd rather have it in the oven than coating our kitchen cabinets, ceiling, countertops, appliances etc. It's contained to one area that has to be cleaned, that's a win in our book :) Thanks for the view, have a great day. Guru Mike & team

Well you've weakened the strike plate, essentially defeating the integrity of the dead bolt. Now you have a piece of wood trim "backing" the bolt and a thin strip of metal from the plate. One good kick and the lock is defeated. Seems to me some enterprising manufacturer could make an assortment of strike plates with the opening shifted either forward/backward or up/down. Would be a seller.
@Wowzersdude-k5c7 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, you have weak strike plates which makes that door easy to kick in. Also, all that glass isn't the best for security either.
@MrKnowItAllGuru7 ай бұрын
Well your comment is not the point of the video...and what I have is better than leaving the door wide open...plus I dont live in fort knox and I have Smith and Wesson items that will be used if some idiot tries to kick in the door.
