It was cut by a gimlet. I understood the government had the gimlet that cut it. The hole had been tampered with by cutting it, so as to make it appear larger on the outside of the box.

Great video, showing all the steps. Although I think your door was wood-lined but the core was chipboard ( I may be mistaken though) judging by the drilled out material. I have fitted these into solid wood doors here in the UK by drilling three holes, one at 15mm for the knob turn bar and two 10mm for the securing screws. rather than that massive hole which may weaken an engineered door. The two 10mm holes gives some leeway for alignment.

What you say is true but there are some more expensive handles with different construction that need the interior space,. These handles I am talking about a fire rated. Also some Schlage handles need the full hole.

Brilliant. I found some videos where they showed how to hang the door but only went as far as the hinges. Nothing on how to make the hole and put the door knob on. This perfectly explains it. You are a very patient man. Especially when you are chiselling out the plate.

sorry for the late response I do not come on here very often. I have never bought a fiberglass door. But all other doors I have bought have had a wood frame with either foam, wood, or a hollow core. Hollow core doors will have a block of wood on one side of the door for the door knob. If you have any other questions please let me know.

When I drilled sideways to finish the last part, the door bulged. Now it has a little ugly lump. I am guessing someone returned the drill bit after using it. The drill bit was very dull. Any idea on how to shrink the lump?

Very helpful! No comparison to the instructions in the door knob kit! One question: I have a door that is slightly less thick than the one in the video. Drilling a 1" hole for the latch assembly seems a bit dicey as I don't want to break through the side. The Kwikset latch assembly I have will fit into a 7/8" hole (I tested it). Is there any reason I shouldn't go with a 7/8" hole in this situation?

great question. the short answer no, go ahead with the smaller hole. But, make sure it is large enough that it operates smoothly and the latch does not bind up. Some latch assemblies do not have a face plate "interior doors". They are are press in and they need the one inch hole. If your latch has a face plate I do not see any problem going with a smaller hole. Thanks for the great question!! Good luck!!!

If you have the tools and skills you can make a door knob. You should watch some blacksmithing videos. I am not sure what kind of door knob you are looking for, but you can find door knobs at your local hardware store, or a google search. If I did not answer your question correctly let me know. They used to make them square now they are all round.If your careful you can use a razor knife to cut the curve, or if you want to spend some money they do sale curved chisels. Thank you for your comment !

Great demonstration. But why did you choose the 2 3/8 backset, instead of 2 3/4 ? I like the further backset so that people with bigger hands don’t scrape there knuckles. Another thing, if this is a new handle it comes with a paper template you stick to the door. All you have to do is transfer the intersecting lines from the template to the door with a punch.

if you took out too much there is an easy fix you can get a thin slice of wood like a shim you use to shim your doors or if you did not take out too much you can use some poster board or thick paper and put it behind to fill in the space
