Excellent. Thank you, I had wondered how one could stop the drill bit from sliding all over the ceramic tile. Very useful tip with the tap and using a ceramic drill bit to make the indent through the glazing. Anna
@yourbeekeeper
@yourbeekeeper 9 жыл бұрын
Anna Quek HI Anna. You might try making a deeper indent in the tile glaze when you are tapping. Remember it's a light tap while your rotate the masonary bit between your fingers...it allows that carbide tip to get fresh bites in the tile. I have not had any issue with the bit wandering.

Was just looking to see what would be needed to drill in ceramic tile (type of drill / drill bit). Had intended to drill at a joint to minimize potential cracking. This video showed me how to mount where I really want to put a towel hanger - in the middle of a tile. Nice job!!
@yourbeekeeper
@yourbeekeeper 9 жыл бұрын
William Cassedy thank you for taking the time to watch my video. You actually have a reduced risk of cracking or chipping when you drill in the center, or field, of the tile. The glazing tends to be thinnest at the edges. Good luck!

From experience. In a bathroom / shower environment the screws might start to corrode and expand at the plug and could crack the tile. I always drill the hole in the tile slightly larger than the hole for the plug so the front end of the plug sits against the wall not the tile. If the screw then corrodes there is room for expansion.

@baddabing4609 5 жыл бұрын
Nicely done :) I normally use a glass drillbit for the holemaking in those kinds of tiles, regular mono/bicottura tiles and marble aswell, it's a bit easier than the masonery bit because it will not slip as much and you don't have to use the hammer for making the pilot holes. I like the masonary drillbit technique for harder types of tiles as a porcellenato.

Great video - although I had a bit of a nightmare trying to get through my tiles. Starting the holes using your method worked perfectly however the tiles were so hard I used three batteries on my drill trying to get through the damned things! Eventually once I was about half way through I decided to try the method that one of the other commenters below suggested - hammering a pin through the back of the tile and then drilling the rest out. This worked a treat (although I was scared that I was going to crack the tile). I tried masonry and twist bits (decent ones as well) and the masonry was the better of the two. Also in case it's useful for anyone - once I'd hammered the pin through the back of the tile I set the drill to hammer to finish the holes off, it was much quicker this way - I wouldn't suggest setting the drill to hammer early on in the process though. 2 holes took nearly 45 minutes to drill - the other two were in the grout - moral of the tale drill through the grout if you can... Cheers for the video - it saved me hours!

+Gareth Jones Fortunately you got through without damage, what kind of tile was it? I have found porcelain tile to be much more difficult to get through than ceramic tiles and natural stone tiles are a whole different beast.

Thank you for this nice and detail oriented video. 👍 My feedback ( for self learning first time DIYs like me). Do practice on a separate tile. You should get used to the materials and tools you would be using. Metal hammer can easily break the tile, therefore you have to experience right level of pressure that you would apply for the pilot marks. Use level tool to double check the alignment of the holes. Measure twice before attempting to start drilling. I would prefer “ diamond tip “ drill bits. And, use gloves & eye protection for your safety.

Hi, I am very impressed with the video, if there is plaster and brick behind the tile on the wall, so I need to change the setting from screw to hammer on the drill once I am through the tile? thanks
@yourbeekeeper
@yourbeekeeper 9 жыл бұрын
Emma Kayne HI Emma, If it's plaster and brick (red brick) then this technique will continue to make a hole. If you are fortunate to have a drill with a hammer feature, then switching it to hammer will speed up the process. But I would definately recommend being absolutely sure you have gone completely through the tile before clicking over to hammer to avoid cracking the tile. Cement brick is more dense and will require a hammer feature.
