wont the water level be low now because the arrow was pointed up?

Actually, it would be a bit high with the arrow pointed sideways. But because the Petco tank has a rim, it actually sits about perfect. If you are going to do this, just double check before you drill. If you are drilling a rimless tank, then the arrow will definitely go up! Thanks for watching and commenting!

What is the benefit of using this overflow box vs using one that is not drilled? Also why not just use stand pipes and drill the bottom? I'm new to reefing and I'm trying to add a sump! Thanks!

My guesses would be An overflow box that isn't drilled involves a tube/pipe that has to go up, above, over the rim, into the other side. That can be a problem if air gets in, or something happens to the pipe. So they aren't failproof. Use instead of a stand pipe through bottom: This type of box system can be easily transferred to any tank with simple removal. Your typical standpipe setup to bottom usually involves a full depth partition that isn't necessarily easy to move to a new tank, and also may not fit the new tank if you did cut it out. Also, the full depth partition eats up more real estate in the tank, whereas a box like this only takes up space at the upper half of the aquarium. Just my 2c.

Most glass aquariums 40 gallons and larger have tempered glass bottoms which means they can’t be drilled without shattering , so drilling your own standpipe isn’t possible on many standard aquariums. They are also aesthetically less appealing in my opinion.

The most important thing I would recommend is to get a better diamond drillbit than the one that comes with most kits. a true quality diamond bit is about $30 and it’s worth it trust me, drilling thin glass like you did you can get by, but if you want to get through 1/2” or thicker then you want both that better bit and an actual drill guide.

What is the purpose of the elite overflow, couldnt you just plumb pvc into the hole and go straight down to the sump?

Yes but it's designed to pull the surface of the water to get and oils or proteins the a lighter then water from floating around on top to create seafoam

do you need a overflow I am wondering why you dont just let the water drop straight from your hole into the sump with a valve to adjust how much flow drops?

Overflow boxes help reduce noise and keep the fish out of the drain. They also help you set a specific water height.
