I've never heard or recommend trimming down in a following sea. Trim up raise the bow and stay on the back of the swell.

This works if the waves aren’t that big because waves can be hard to judge, but if the waves or swells are big you will always build up more speed than you can handle and sinking a boat only takes one mistake. If the the waves are big then you have to transverse the waves with bow a little high. I’ve seen 30ft boats nose dive trying to keep the wave behind them, then they just roll over and your done.

Yes and stay on the crest of the wave without going over it, or you risk burying the bow into the wave in front of you

Will the boat use less when it feels as if it is being "pushed" Vs Pulled. Common sense would say yes. Any ideas?

Hi Buddy, Thanks for your question. for a few secs yes, but you will need to compensate by accelerating to stay on the wave in front of you, so that the following wave doesnt come into your boat via the transome. So its irrelavant really regarding fuel consumption. hope its of help. regards Carl

Aloha, as a new boater from recent swells. It's very scary to keep up with swells. Is this true for any sized swells? I think when I was out it was in the 4-6 foot range and man was I moving and gaining speed.

Hi Louis, Thanks for the question buddy.. yes swells can be quite dangerous, so its imperative that you remain in full control of the boat, cut speed at times and just be very careful. Yes its scary for sure, but if you understand whats going on, then you can control the boat to suit the conditions etc. Hope its of help to you louis. Happy Boating buddy

Boats, Fishing, Guitars & Rock n Roll I was told that going upseas it's better to stay at a 45 degree angle so the boat doesn't slam on the swells. The same was told to me while going down sea. Do you just trim with throttle control head on going up and downsea? Downsea is just a tad bit scarier as the swells push up on the transom as well as sometimes the nose dipping down. I know conditions vary, but I have a 19ft glassply with twin 90s on them.

Hi Louis, Yes thats quite right, a 45 deg angle is better for going into a head sea, but again it really depends on how rough it is, the problem with a 45 deg is that they'll be a lot of splashing going on. with regard to a following sea, again its keeping control of the boat and and keep on the upside of the crest of the following wave, not right on the crest but just below it, bow slightly tilted up, so you dont bury the bow into the next wave
