Comments on Your Comments: NEW: How to Drive Over Speedbumps kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYuknpifqs9_eKs 1. "Don't drive a lowered car then!" first off, this applies to plenty of sports cars, lowered or not. Second, there are ditches and driveways so steep even a Camry will have trouble. Third, the same principle applies for lots of vehicles even 4x4s, trailers etc. You can see a variant of the technique for 4x4s here kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGiYhGWQnpKMjsk And finally, your money, your choice, if you want a lowered car it's a free world. Enjoy your ride, live your best life and cruise by the haters who have nothing better to do with their miserable lives than throw negativity and judgement. Must be awful to just walk the street and be so incredibly annoyed by other people's choices you can't help but comment. I feel sorry for you guys. 2. "This is obvious how do people not know this" well, everyone has a different set of life experiences and natural talent, so no, it's not obvious to everyone, same way as the people making that point are unable to figure out this exact point. 3. Why was the car meet held there? That was just one carpark of many, and yes the organisers could have put a plank of wood down. But the driveway was driveable with the right technique, and my goal here is to spread the word of how it can be done, not mock people for not knowing. I wouldn't know how to plant roses or cook a lobster for example. Thank you all, carry on watching :-)

I would add the fact since so many people don't know this, it just goes to show how poorly driving schools prepare people. If someone doesn't think of this technique on their own, at least the driving school should teach you.

This ‘angling off’ approach has an important side effect which also helps prevention of the nose grounding. Approaching on the angle means that both front wheels don’t ‘drop’ into the gutter throat at exactly the same time. Instead when ‘angling off’ each front wheel gets to drop on its own, leaving the other front corner to help carry the cars weight at that exact moment…. Can make an important difference especially when your car is really low (my Radical has an approach angle of less than 3 degrees!)
@L2SFBC2 жыл бұрын
Exactly right, although having most (all) of the car's front axle weight carried on one wheel will compress the suspension more than if the weight was equally carried, but even so, angling off works...as the people shown at Cars & Coffee proved! A three degree AA is really low, must have great aero on that car :-)

The reason for the slow is so the suspension doesn’t compress on impact, further reducing the approach angle. Also, it was interesting to see how many people stopped on crunch, and then went back down the drive edge, further increasing the damage. An extreme improvement is to be parallel to the gutter and actually use a tightly turned wheel to be the first thing up the gutter. Then you have to straighten up so the rear doesn’t impact the full kerb. It’s lucky some of those cars didn’t lose traction from lifting a drive wheel on the angle.
@L2SFBC2 жыл бұрын
Good points, I actually thought about showing how to mount a kerb using the full-lock technique but left it out in the end. Modern cars have brake traction control which helps with the cross-axled situation.

This seems to be like fashion without regard to function. It is a suburban street street you filmed and a relatively flat one at that. I learned about this, when trying to part half on the sidewalk, half on the road (common in Eastern Europe where I lived a decade). So you line up parallel, and let the wheel climb up, and pull the rest of the car like on a jack. The rear will rise on that side too, and youre good. I was climbing some 1ft tall curbs this way. Same thing for driveways. Mine is fine for cars (even things like Demons), but my buss needs to swing out. In the US we call that a buttonhook, which also helps with turning into a narrow road where you will pop a curb if you take it normally. Trucks, buses do it (though you are supposed to go into oncoming traffic, since they are likely stopped) and also if you drive a long car, like a 70s Continental or limo.
@L2SFBC6 ай бұрын
Yes, I've demonstrated that technique in 4x4s. I didn't know it was called a buttonhook though!

This never used to be a problem in the old days where a typical family sedan had similar ground clearance to a modern SUV. And driveway design is also to blame. At some point steep curves became trendy versus the shallow ones of earlier years. These days I literally have to plan all my trips so as to make sure I am going to do a left turn into any driveway or otherwise I already know the driveway is "safe" for a straight in approach with no angle. And I just have a normal car on standard suspension. It does not help that even standard cars these days all have soft plastic lips under the front bumper which I presume are partly there to help direct the airflow to the right places and partly there to warn us when we are approaching a "hard" clearance limit. At least the soft plastic lips are cheap and easy to replace. I carry a couple of spares just in case (have not needed them yet).

I have to angle my way into my favorite gas station if I don't it'll scrape (2022 Camaro). I drive a truck, sometimes I pull a drop deck trailer, I've scrapped the trailer before pulling into a customer lot, that's where I learned about this.

6:30 ...I like it when he crunch it once and decided to back down a bit to give it another go for a good measure.. :D ...look at the satifying smile on his face, obviously nothing worse than uneven wears.. :D

There was one driveway so steep with the street just as steep going back up where I’d use the entire driveway to go practically sideways down and tipsy two wheel it as i transition from the driveway to the street.

We have 15 to 20cms high round speedbumps in some places in morocco. I had three alfas in the course of 5 years, all of them have broken diffusers becaise of this. Eventually I learned to angle off like this, but even doing so will still get something under the car to scrape, especially if I have whales in the back seat. Which was a regular occurance.
