At last, the delayed drift tutorial! I don't make many tutorials for this game because it's just not my style of content but it was bothering me that a proper tutorial didn't exist for this basic, yet extremely important technique used in practically all the World Records for this game and by all the best drivers online.
* This technique works for EVERY vehicle but is most important to the ones with a higher drift stat since they have to drift so tight to execute a mini turbo.
For ground driving, slip drifts would be the next tutorial to make since those are also very important.
I recorded a lot of this on emulator for extra bodacious quality! Though, I messed something up because it's 50fps instead of 60 LOL

you hop and land as close to the edge of the ramp as possible, then a bit after you go off the ramp do a trick, the best time to wait is about 6 frames (1/10), but that is quite hard to do as a human. just start by timing the trick as soon as you leave the ramp, it only saves like 0.1 seconds to do it optimally.

You have answered my prayers lol. I’ve always wanted someone to go over these advanced mkwii techniques. The only tutorials that actually exist on KZbin are for spindrifting lol. I’d love to see stuff on soft drifts, different directions/types of tricks for different purposes, aerial movement (turning, wheelies, pull backs), and so much more. This game gives you so much control of your character and stuff like this is why

Great explanation, glad to see this so soon. This is the first step everyone needed to know for keeping up online. While slip drift has been what we're used to as the term for the action, pfmp721 (TAS*Reo) made a tech demonstration video (the first of its kind) where he used slip drifting for when you immediately land into a drift from some pocket of air time or after landing from a ramp (examples: DS Delfino Square the right turn before the split paths--where you land from your wheelie immediately into the drift, and GCN Waluigi Stadium hairpin ramp--the drift right after landing). Instead, he calls consecutive drifts without a hop in-between chain drifts (similar to chain wheelies). I don't expect the term to catch on at all but I found it interesting that Reo made out the distinction between the two actions. I used to call it slip drifting too like everyone else, but after seeing that video I started saying chain drift.

It was always confusing why sometimes I let go of drift early on turns (like what Troy was doing as a demonstration at the end). I didn't understand why my timing was off sometimes and now ik its because I was doing delayed drifts sometimes and then my next drift would take longer and my timing would be off. Now that I understand how it works it'll be a lot easier to do it more purposefully and get consistent with it. Great tutorial.

Nice video, Troy! Explained it really well! :) Though, I'd like to add one extra thing which you didn't mention about delayed & non-delayed that is pretty important. Non-delayed is speedwise faster than delayed. While doing a delayed drift, in the hop, you're at 84 km/h, while non-delayed you'll be at 85 km/h. That's why it's important to still go for non-delayed drifts if you'll either be able to still get a MT out in time, or like you said on rBC3 last turn, when the turn is long enough. That's why you, for example, see ppl still go for a non-delayed drift on the first drift of rPG, or rMR first drift of the double drift turn (not many do it there, though, depends on the allignment :p), both of the KC U-turns and the waterfall sc and many others parts of other tracks. 👍🏻
