Today we're looking at extremely high mileage examples of the legendarily indestructible off road and college commuter machine: the 3rd gen Toyota 4Runner. The Toyota 4Runner will take anything you can throw at it, be it decades of commuting, rock crawling, or just blasting those leather seats with farts, it'll just spit back in your face and ask for more. It's kind of hot in that aspect ngl

I’m this person. I love my PNW rust free 230k miles 97 4Runner with a factory rear dif lock! I bought it with a trade in of my 2008 Hyundai accent and 5k. I quickly found out the head gasket was blown, and I decided to go all in. I did the head gasket, brakes, shocks, AC, starter, and heater core. It now drives like a dream!!! My paint looks like shit, but I like it because it makes it look less worthy of stealing. I named it Ted, because my Limited badge was already broken, so it became Ted.

Loved my third gen. Sold it with 230k on it last year and I’m confident it would make it to double that if rust wasn’t eating it. Rust is the number one killer of these and older tacos

Yeah I have a 01 4Runner with 244k and there's a few spots starting to rot and almost the entire bottom of the car is covered in surface rust. But in Michigan that's almost all you get unless you want to spend $15k.

Me and my friends all have very very different tastes in cars (Rally cars, vintage euro, kei cars, lifted trucks) but the only 2 cars we all realistically want to own are 90s 4Runners and NA Miatas. Anything past that is a argument. Even a automatic 2wd 4 cyl one we would all daily drive without a second thought, which can't be said for a auto 1.6 Miata.

These are becoming legendary! They have the proven 5VZ-FE V6 that has stood the test of time; the new ones have not yet done this! The 4th gen may be the only modern one that has the V8 option stock! This is a great video clip!

I got passed down a 2002 3rd gen 4runner SR5 (no 4wd) here in WA from my grandma. 1st owner, thinking of sending an email for you guys to review it. It has 240k miles on it and the paint is sunburned from Las Vegas with no cracked dash. The engine recently got an engine light. Toyota mechanics told me it has leaking oil pan, leaking valve cover and needs a timing belt replacement. I have all the parts but they are charging 6k USD for labor. I dont know if I should sell it or keep it. Its completely stock except for off-road tyres and ICON rims. I still have the stock rims.

Timmy The Toolman has really good, detailed, easy to follow videos on our generation of 4Runner, Including the valve cover gasket job and the timing belt. For the oil pan you might need a professional shop though.

There's definitely some people engine swapping 3rd gens. A lot will just find a JDM 5vz. Some will go 1uz, 2uz, LS, 1kz, TDI, etc. I plan on swapping mine when my 5vz dies (might be 20 years from now though who knows lol). Also the only way you lose money on 3rd gens is offroad mods. Those depreciate instantly unless you want to save all the OEM stuff and take off the mods to sell separately and restore the truck back to stock. Oddly enough the mods BARELY depreciate when sold separately.

The 3rd gen looks better but the 4th gen IS better. Bigger, nicer interior and has better power with the same mpg. I feel like any 4Runner less than $12k is almost driving for free, unless you add over 100k miles. I bought my 2004 in 2017 with 130k miles and it now has 162k and it's probably worth the same.

Absolutely the white 4-Runner for 3500 in Nevada with California plates would be a great buy how would I know this because Nevada is a dry State I guarantee that there is no rust on the chassis and frame and because it most likely was sold in California from the dealership back during its brand new days it most likely has zero rust because of the California weather unless it was someone who lived by the coast
