One thing I've learned from driving in mountains is that whatever gear you're on when uphill, if downhill the same part of the road you'll go with the same gear. For example, if you uphill on second gear 40 kmh, then on return you have to downhill on second gear 40 kmh so that you don't need to brake all the time

Just drove through Colorado and I used cruise control in my older Honda Civic the entire time (with the exception of very steep hills, which I would use brakes only when the cruise control didn't slow me down enough for harsh curves. Any input about using cruise control on an automatic?
@freedomdove3 жыл бұрын
I found cruise control to be somewhat dangerous, depending on the terrain. I couldn't have made it through some mountain passes without it b/c I couldn't keep the pedal to the metal enough to maintain good speed in my Suburban. The cruise control was able to overcome that. But in some areas, it couldn't slow down enough for the descents so I had to turn off the cruise--especially through windy roads. I had to control my speed the whole time to feel safe while on backroads that winded and sloped a lot.

@milehighbuilt63735 жыл бұрын
Can you clarify about driving with an auto transmission; If you're in drive & start to drive down a mountain hill can you just switch to 3rd and stay there until the road starts to level out? Also should you ever switch to 2nd? For example driving from Denver to Georgetown after you pass through the Eisenhower tunnels on I-70). Thank You
@TheFeesher5 жыл бұрын
3rd may be too high for an auto, typically 3rd is still an overdrive gear in automatics, which first help much for slowing down. I’ve never been on that route, but 2nd is probably your best option or even 1st depending on the speed limit and angle of decline
@milehighbuilt63735 жыл бұрын
@@TheFeesher This is a Highway on I-70 East; let's say coming from Georgetown to Denver, CO Downgrade is 6% and speed limit is 65 mph, so would you still say 2nd gear is the best option? If so what's the highest speed in 2nd you should allow your car to go before switching to 3rd or Drive? Also is it safe to switch from Drive down to 2nd if you are going 40 mph or less & you just started the decline or should you do it before? (NOTE: In Drive for an Automatic Transmission if going downhill at 60mph on the highway a car would build up speed of 80-90 mph if you don't brake or switch to another gear).

I have a question about that. When I was on a mountain pass, 6% downgrade, the turns were so sharp and the road was winding. The way my automatic works is if I want to shift down, I have to pull the stick to the Right and hold it down with my hand. I rode my breaks because I needed both hands on the steering wheel. What would you do in that situation?

You probably pull it to the right and then click it down to shift down and click it up to shift up.

@billystink4611 No, just true. Religious books are made of fables, it’s why there’s been so many religions with a Jesus type character (good, benevolent, resurrected after 3 days). Religious texts are more about the morals and ethics you pick up, rather than the stories themselves. This is also why the Bible has the little line about how a false Christian (somebody that doesn’t actually follow the morals/ethics they preach) is worse than a non believer.
