Left Lane is for *passing only* On a 2 lane highway, you should drive on the right lane and pass of the left. Once you passed, get right back in the right. If you see a car wanting to merge onto the highway on the ramp, merge to the left lane to let them safely merge in the highway, once it's all clear, get right back in the right lane. Varying in some justifications, if you see a cop pulled over on the right shoulder, merge towards the left lane and once you pass the cop, get right back in the right lane. If you are unable to merge left, which you should, slow down! On 3+ lane highways, you'll be fine on the middle lane, but if you're traveling very slow compared to traffic flow, you should then be on the rightmost lane. Regardless of you are exceeding the speed limit or not, if you are slower than traffic flow, keep right, be courteous and let faster traffic pass.

In most European countries it is illegal to stay in one lane the whole trip. We have to use the rightmost lane unless we want to pass a slower vehicle, usually trucks because their speed is limited to 55 miles an hour. Passing on the right hand side is illegal too, and the tickets are expensive. It makes no sence sticking to your (middle) lane like an idiot. If there is a exit/merging lane coming up, you can make way if need so.

Why can't I find a consensus on this: if you are passing someone slower than you do you go back in the original lane you were in(given that it is safe to do so)? Or do you stay in the left lane the WHOLE time? I understand if you end up staying there because maybe the innermost lanes really are slow and you end up having to pass everyone but if there were to come a point where your speed could be maintained do you usually switch back?
@aligerous2 ай бұрын
You should not use the freeway lane to get up to speed to merge. Too late. Use the transition (on) ramp to get up to speed to assimilate into the freeway flow. That is what is it for. Don't merge into traffic going 70 MPH when you're barely passing through 50. That is dangerous for all.

The only thing I hate about the highway is rush hour within a city and not doing anything driving for long hours. Like in the city you are constantly moving your feet and hands on the highway you set the cruise and then it’s like you just steer and maybe hit the signal once and a why’ll. I see why many fall asleep on the highway.

Technically, the right lane is the cruise lane, every other lane to the left of the right is passing. This is how they drive in Germany. Also, do not pass on the right, passing on the left is more expected and noticeable. Also, most people will be more aggressive to get off the highway than move to the left if they see you coming up.

Any tip how to prevent it pls? Do you really have to be some kind of agressive to merge into higway? Thanks :-)
@peymanlowery93858 жыл бұрын
no....you do NOT have to be aggressive unless this works for you...Slowing down is not as bad as these videos make it seem... Best way for you to merge onto highway traffic is to drive all the way to the end of the merging lane, I mean RIGHT TO THE END OF IT ! With your blinking signal on , of course ! This way, cars behind you do not overtake you and the cars on the highway lanes WILL notice you

But the left lane really IS for passing. #1 lane is the passing lane or the fast lane as some call it. Middle lanes are for thru traffic. #2 land should be used when people are done passing in the #1 lane to be courteous to anyone else going higher speeds in the fast lane. Right most lanes are typically used for slow traffic, merging off, and merging on. But the sole purpose of the fast lane isn't for people going great distances at great speeds. People use the fast, passing lanes quite a bit and they aren't going on long trips.
