I suggest you to use the engine break and downshift to slow down, and don't put it in neutral before stopping, the car acts differently if it's not in gear, good video anyway, even though i didn't liked the way he handled that stick, in europe beginners shift like that

Just to be clear, the method of starting from a stop with no gas is to help you learn and feel the friction point of the clutch. I ALWAYS give my car some gas when I am starting from a stop (mostly because I wouldn't start rolling fast enough for other drivers behind me). Some cars cannot start moving from a stop without giving them some gas or they will stall, however most modern day cars are able to automatically add fuel to compensate for not using the throttle. Again, this technique is for practice only, hope this helps!
@Paul-nt9fc7 жыл бұрын

My dad had me come to a rolling stop in the hill then slowly release the clutch. Yes, I did dump the clutch and stall it. Yes, I did get somewhat frustrated. Yes, I did manage to grind the reverse gear a small bit (sometimes, you gotta grind em to find em). And finally, yes, I did have the glorious moment where I absolutely nailed it. you missed some info there buddy. you are driving a bmw. not everyone will have a features filled car. yours have a hill assist so when you release clutch your car will move. its called creap feature in my country car manuals. its basically the hill assist function. cars without this function like cheaper and older cars will just stall out. you need to press gas to get the car rolling on such cars. just some constructive criticism...
@williegarrett83137 жыл бұрын
shameer to add' There are a lot of things that he missed. For instance, you have to learn the engagement point of the car. Each car will be different, even if they are the same make and model. You also need to learn about free play in a clutch. Every clutch will not engage at the top, and some of them will engage midway, so learning the car is a big deal. Another thing is making sure that you have the right gear to match the speed, even though passenger car transmissions are synchronized, you still need to match the speed with the appropriate gear. Once you learn your car, you can also do progressive shifting ( also known as skipping gears) to help reduce clutch wear and fuel consumption, when applicable. Another thing that I seen him do is coast sometimes in neutral. As for a person that has several years of experience behind the wheel, you should never coast. Always keep the vehicle in gear. It can help with traction in the event of an emergency. Just wanted to point out a few things.

So at 8:37 you push down the brake but not the clutch. I've always been told that you need to have the clutch engaged when braking, or is that just when you're coming to a stop and you're gonna need the clutch to start going again? Also great video and it helps give me some confidence in the manual car I'm about to buy.

People don't drive manuals for the same reason people don't grow their own food. Yeah, it's better. Yeah, it's more engaging. Yeah, you'll know exactly what's in all of your meals. But like, who cares? I just want to eat. Same thing. Like, who cares? I just want to get to work. That said, I'm starting to learn manual so I can get the convertible I want.
@vdglife7 жыл бұрын
At the beginning you showed to start learning first gear without using the gas petal. That only works on vehicles with Hill assist. Manual vehicles without hill assist will just shut off if you don't add a bit of gas. A lot of modern vehicles come with hill assist but in the event someone purchases an older vehicle it is best to inform them of this issue. As always great video. You should have another video showing tricks with Manual vehicles. Like how to do a rolling start in case your starter is not working.

If you have a lighter car like mine, a '02 VW Beetle (that doesn't have hill assist), you can actually get the car rolling without using any gas. I'm sure you're right about heavier vehicles though.

Hi Justin. Ok so I'm gonna have some questions. The comments section might come up with new paragraphs. Oops Coming off of the clutch the car usually shakes and then stalls. This is based on a Ford Festiva ( In France) ( not Festa ) the shifter was real long like an 18 wheeler truck. The I'd hit the gas and car would peel out. Reverse looks ok. I'm just surprised that I don't have to rev, the car to get into first When shifting up are lights on the speedometer that light up when ur supposed to shift? Shifting up you take ur foot off the gas? And shift, ok so alternate footings, got it. So you can take ur foot off the gas and put it on the brake without clutching? Odd that's not what I did in France Down shifting u didn't double" Blip" the gas. Hill I had to hold the hand brake rev the engine so it would roll backwards, then put it into first hit the gas and then into 2nd. The Dead pedal has to do with Holloween? Lol Ok J, I'll keep looking at the video. I don't have a car practice on buy I think I got it. Great instructional !! Shaun of NYC
