I'm 42 and just started skating again after a 20 year break. Never learned to drop in as a kid but I just did it last week for the first time! I'd been standing on the edge of a 3 foot quarter pipe at my local park for 6 months. Then I watched your video, went through the steps and nailed it. Thanks JB for the great technical and motivating content.

I'm 43 and have had a very long break from skating until my 2 sons wanted to go to a park. Got the board I wanted and have been working on my stability again after ankle injuries from the military. Glad to see I'm not the only "old guy" at the park re-learning 😅 Hoping to finally commit to dropping in tomorrow 🤞🏻 Seeing your comment gave me a boost of confidence. Cheers from Arizona! 🤘🏻

Same here, all the way. I'm just 35, tho. Just got it like 2 days ago after only being back on the board for 6 weeks. Never got the drop in as a kid. Went through the steps, bank, small tranny, then hit the 5 foot quarter pipe at the local park Saturday. Ready to try the bowl, this guys teaching finally helped me figure out the pump too

Hitting 51 next week & just started skating. I rode maybe twice in my teens and it was always on some board with no concave or pop. The hangers were either plastic with a low quality steel axle or entirely cheap metal and both would eventually bend after riding off a few small drops. Initially, it just started out as buying the board I would've wanted back then just to have. That changed once a friend's children started telling me about what they do which made me decide to start skating myself. It's been two weeks now and the format of your videos really helps!

Another tip that helped me when I first started with drop-ins is to grab the front of your board just before you actually get you foot on there and it’ll help you to make sure your leaning forward enough. Eventually you won’t need to do this as you’ll just get used to the motion of leaning forward. Hope this helps, good luck!

Personally I like the leaning over explanation for the ups and downs but if I were to have watched this before I learned to drop in, I don’t think I would’ve pressed down hard enough based on the way you’re explaining it. I take everything literally and explanations that may seem like common sense to someone who knows what they’re doing, doesn’t always make sense to me. So if you’re reading this and you’re like me. You can’t just lean over slow because like he said, as soon as you put any pressure on your front wheels your back wheels will start rolling. You really need to ensure that your front wheels hit the ground and you kept that pushing momentum because you will get really hurt if you lean back. It’s way better to over lean than not lean enough. Hope that makes sense and was helpful if you heard the instructions like I did. This guy is amazing for teaching this is the only video I didn’t quite understand

I just started getting back into skating and this is really interesting. So I used to skate quite a bit when I was younger but stopped for about 15 years I'd say. The muscle memory of dropping in sort of made me forget just how hard you have to press when you fall forward. I wiped out pretty good my first time dropping in after 15 years and I think it's because when I was really comfortable with it I forgot how much force I was actually throwing into my front foot. You just start to get so comfortable with it you sort of don't think about it. That or maybe you learn the exact amount of force so you stop over slamming. But I know if you don't slam enough it hurts lol

@@SkateparkLessons you mentioned in the last part that by overleaning in, you might shoot forward... is this the case when people don't tuck in enough? If I overlean, does the tuck in help minimalize the chances of me shooting of my board?

I remember the first time I dropped in. I was nervous about it and all that, I didn't want to try in front of other people (mostly because I didn't want to pussy out in front of them) so I went to the skatepark in the middle of a weekday when there was absolutely nobody else there, I stood up on the coping and told myself to commit...and three minutes later I was still standing there hesitating. So I got down rolled around on some ramps and shit for a few minutes and thought 'Ok, I'm going back up and just doing it, no hesitation"... Nope, again I got up there and just overthought it and let the nerves get the best of me. This happened one or two more times before I was just like "No more of this bullshit". I climbed back up to the coping, put my foot over the bolts and just committed myself forward before I could even have the thought of NO. And.... I fell off the board. Which of course was what scared me about it in the first place. BUT I am so glad I did because you know what? It was fucking nothing, I barely felt it, I was totally fine. I was totally fine because I committed. And immediately realising that before I even thought twice about it I was on my feet and climbing the coping again and just went for it again within seconds and nailed my first ever drop in right there. Then just did it like 50 more times that day just because I was pumped that I could. Falling that first time was one of the biggest weight lifted off my shoulders feelings I've ever had in life. It was like falling that first time was way more of an important step for me than nailing it. I mean obviously you don't want to fall off your board but that was the moment I actually understood the words when people always said "if you commit you will be fine". That sentence was so hard to believe before that moment. But they were right, I committed, fucked up and I was totally fine. Although you never want to fall backwards, that really is dangerous and results in injuries. But the point is, if you commit then that will never ever happen. It's only when you don't commit that it could happen. So really the whole standing up there and hesitating ritual isn't exactly stupid. Because if you are doing that it means you are not ready to commit and if you have that feeling then don't do it because there is a very good chance that YOU WILL hurt yourself. Also it boosted my confidence in skating immensely. At the time I couldn't ollie, manual or anything. All I could really do was ride the board, do a frontside kick turn on a ramp, drop off a small ledge and almost land a shuv it. I wasn't at a point where I was comfortable calling myself a skater (not saying you can't at that point, it's just the way I felt about myself). But rolling away after that first drop in I had the thought right there of "I'm a fuckin skater now" and it can only get better from here. It even gave me a second wind in wanting to skate at all. Beforehand I wasn't sure if had it in me to ever get good and didn't really see myself continuing on with skating. But bam, after that I was like "I'm learning whatever I can and none of it is scary now because I just dropped in".

Today I managed to do my first roll in since I stopped skating about 7yrs ago. Next time I visit the park - I will give a few of the lessons here a go to get further :) Thank you for the brilliant breakdown in particular w/ the bank drop ins and pump timing. Skating to lose weight and ultimate dream is to visit America and carve up Skatopia's legendary bowls. First: Time to get those drop ins second nature at my local parks in Dorset, UK!!! Update; went and did some bank drop ins as this video and gearing up to getting super comfy with them. Defo gonna recommend these brill guides :)

Hey, I dropped in for the first time thanks to you JB! It was a driveway ramp, but hey, gotta start somewhere. Totally was able to apply your principles, using the "coping", then just the ramp. Great stuff, and I felt great. Thanks again.

I’ve noticed from several videos your emphasis on keeping your feet even. I’ve never really thought about that. I noticed first on your Ollie video. I always had my front foot flush with the edge of the board, but I never really though about the fact that my back foot isn’t.
