Yes, you can use coloured paint the same way. Be careful when using black and a colour though. If you try to put a colour ontop of black shading it will turn out a bit murky. So best to start with your light colours first.

Superb tutorial. I just bought my first dry brush oil painting from an artist who learned this technique from KZbin (no doubt from you), and I wanted to learn more about the technique. Love your wit.

I was actually just browsing KZbin art vids, and came across a few people doing these amazing photo-realistic portraits. They were speed videos but I watched a few and looked at one guys website and found out it was oil paint on paper. Think I managed to find one tutorial about the technique but it wasn't for portraits nor much to it.

The big soft brushes I use are a natural fibre, (Kolinksy Sable), they are very soft. Tursn out it's actually a water-colour brush. There are probably synthetic brushes out there that will work fine too just as long as they are soft. I use a synthetic brush for my darker lines (Marabu-Universal) If you keep getting streaks make sure the paint is evenly coated and any excess is taken off of the brush.

Yes, any oil paint should do. Keep in mind that if you use different colours though, some oil colours are thinner and don't spread as far.

Third brush is a Round Brush with Sable fibres. The important part of that one is that its smooth and soft so I get a nice soft coverage when I do the skin.

@TheSoulsify eek! Well, the white handled ones.... I got while I was in the states a while ago :-s Couldn't tell you where, but the brand is'Simply Simmons' and the blue handled ones I've had for years and years, they are Winsor&Newton - Cirrus, with Kolinsky Sable fibres.

Yes you should spray it with a sealer of some sort once you've finished. You can buy a spray in art stores, but hairspray works just as well and is cheaper. Are these water colours that come in the tubes? I'd say give it a try but I have no experience with water colour paint myself.

I find that the synthetic ones work well for the dark outlines, and natural soft fibres are good for the skin, where I want everything to be soft and smooth. I dont have any camel hair though, just kolinksy sable.

@GoldAirSummer What sort of paint are you using? I use a medium grain paper, which is what you would likely use for water colour. You dont want anything as smooth as normal paper, or printer paper.

@BlueKittyCreations I was using 95gr/65lbs sketching paper. I've just bought some 230gr, so hopefully that will help me. Regarding the paint, I used Winton oil colour paints the other day and they didn't quite work, so I've just bought some water mixable oil colour today, the same stuff you use. Hopefully I'll get better results! :)

Would you ever use 300g/m2 medium watercolour paper in your portraits? I have attempted a few portraits after learning from your tutorials and looking at ur vids. I have taken ur advice and practiced to see what I am comfortable in my approach to dry brushing - so far I like to go pretty dark. I have even got a few commissions and I am currently working on another one at present. Trying this new grain above but not sure about it? Ur tutorial is def best on KZbin it's helped alot... Thanks.

any arts and crafts store should carry a variety of natural and synthetic brushes. Check your local stores - they should have something suitable. Winsor&Newton is a popular brand, and I got my Simply Simmons brushes in the States, but I can't remember the name of the store.

I've never used ink, and I don't have any to test the method out, but I can't see it working very well with it...Since you want to keep the brushes dry and ink is essentially coloured water. Best way to find out for sure is to just try it out on a small peice of paper to see how dry you can keep it and if you can get a smooth layer of ink on the paper :-)
