In this video we learn how to inexpensively dry and wet clean vinyl records for optimal playback. In fact, carbon fiber brushes plus rolling rubber tools are perfect to use on the platter before listening. When instead we have a lot of dirt and grit, we need wet solutions and the Knosti disco-antistat is a great solution at a very low cost!
P.S. NEVER USE ANY TYPE ALCOHOL because alcohol literally MELTS vinyl!!
ATTENTION!: People have reported that in the last version of the Disco-Antistat Mixture there actually IS a percentage of ethanol. I do not know if this is also present in the old version (nothing is reported on it). I am sure that this percentage is very low, nevertheless, I think it is better to rinse the records after the treatment with demineralized water in order to remove the possible remains of ethanol, which may be harmful to vinyl after a period of time, or, better, use a different mixture alcohol free.

i have bought a disco antistat about 2 years ago so i went downstairs and checked. it says "contains: ethanol" on the bottle of the fluid. i never noticed any problems with yet so i guess it is a very low concentration. since the mixture is kind of expensive i have also tried my own mixture using a low percentage of isopropyl alcohol instead with no immediately apparent problems either. by the way: my dad had a knosti too so this thing is around since the 70s at least and the concept and design has not changed one bit - i mean there is not much to improve on it anyways (except some sort of spout / beak on the fluid tank because pouring the fluid back into the filter always makes a mess) but even though this thing is around for so many decades it appears to me that it does not get a lot of recommendation on hifi / vinyl forums and such ... they all seem to recommend to get more sophisticated and way more expensive contraptions instead forgetting that spending +300 € just for a cleaning solution may not be an option to most people.

First off, I would recommend people (especially for old records) not to use the original inner sleeve (of course I don't mean you throw it away) but to get a new (preferably anti-static) generic inner sleeve and use that one (the original sleeve will stay inside the main sleeve). That will save you from a lot of dust each time you insert your record in. Second, before cleaning, I make a pre-cleaning with a dust blower and then do the main cleaning either with carbon brush or micro-fiber tissue. Sometimes I also apply some cleaning solution for LCD/LED screens. To remove the dust collected right after the brush (in a line, as also seen on the video), I again use the dust blower (I blow it from the inner to the outer side of the record). It takes a few cycles to get the record completely clean (well... it's never completely clean but say "adequately" clean).

I buy many used records from eBay and have developed a 5 stage budget cleaning routine. I have 2 zero stat machines and a spin clean. First I give my records a wipe with a carbon fibre brush to remove loose muck. Then I spray the record with a turgitol and distilled water mix. Then into the first zero stat machine with its dedicated liquid. As this contains alcohol it is then into the Spinclean system with its dedicated liquid to make sure the alcohol is removed. Lastly it is into my second zero stat which just contains distilled water to make sure all the residue is removed. Once dry I put the record into a Nagaoka type sleeve. I find that this system works well for me, it’s very therapeutic and ensures that my records are kept very clean.

I have a few hundreds of LPs that were never washed (many more than 30 years old) so I decided it was time to go through the collection and wash them all (a long and tedious job). For the task at hand I bought the knosti disco antistat generation ii which has a handle making the rotation much easier. It has one major problem thought! As you stated, the liquid can be reused after each session (7 LPs at a time). As the washing went along, the liquid, in spite of the filter, became darker and darker. This meant, on one hand, that the solution was doing what it was supposed to do but, on the other hand, it was becoming contaminated and this contamination was being passed on to the surface of the subsequent records. That beats the purpose wouldn't you say? So I decided to "pre-wash" the records in order to eliminate the most obvious dust and debri and keep the "magic" solution as clean as possible (using as well, two filters instead of one). A quick wash in a mix of distilled water with 1/10th of isopropyl alcohol (yes alcohol), a thorough rinse with distilled water to eliminate any alcohol residue and, once dried, ran the vinyl through the machine with the anti-static cleaning fluid. Finished it off with another rinse with distilled water (the antistat mixture contains ethanol indeed). Yes, I doubled the work but the outcome was more reassuring than before. Each bottle costs almost 30 euros (ouch) so next time I'm changing to L'Art Du Son costing 42 euros but, at least, I can produce one gallon of cleaning fluid which I'll dispose off after each use. No more contamination. Thanks for your nice and easy guidance. Because of you I bought the carbon fiber brush, the stylus tracking scale, the stylus cleaning gel, the protractor and, last but not least, a new turntable. You're becoming expensive my friend!!!

The absolute best tool for cleaning Vinyl Records is the Groovmaster (TM) Label Saver Protector found on eBay ($40). Secondly, the best cleaner is Tergikleen by SD Essentials - used by the Library of Congress (Government Archives). The rest is common sense (your hands - no machines, nice clean rags, chamois for drying, filtered water or distilled, soft velvet brush for gently wiping along the grooves of the vinyl, nice comfortable thin rubber gloves). After washing and rinsing and drying, before you play the record, use GrooveWasher dust removal velvet brush (wet system) to ensure there is no dust on the vinyl prior to playing. Yes, then use Talisman magnet to remove all the static from the record. This is the best system after many years of trials. Your hands are the best tools - use them!

for dry cleaning, i use a grounded, antistatic brush, followed by a brief puff of canned air to remove what's visible. the grounded brush is the only thing i've found that renders the dust easily removable from the record surface. as to wet cleaning new records... i recently acquired an ultrasonic cleaner; one of the generic ones that clean 5 records at a time. i don't know what kind of debris is on new records, but it's visible in the bottom of the ultrasonic bath. not nearly as much as on old records, nevertheless it's there.

This topic is paramount to any who can not tolerate snap, crackle, and pop. So far, having experimented with dozens of technics, the best means to de-contaminate records so far, new or used LPs, has been to Spin Clean them with Spin Clean Detergent in distilled water and then air dry. That's it. No static and no debris to cause pops. Now, this does not eliminate pops caused by record damage, or record defect. I purchased a Classical LP the other day, a Decca production pressed in Germany. this recording on first and subsequent play sounded like a fireworks display, pops galore. I do not tolerate this sort of thing so the record was returned for a refund. In fact, if I buy a new record which has any snap, crackle, or pop after wet cleaning it goes back to the record store. These LPs cost too much to accept defective ones.

I washed them by hand since i don't have the vacum machine the wash it solution is made for. The result was very bad. In fact, there is much more noise than without cleaning the records. I tried with just the solution, just demineralised water et with a mixture of both. It is always the same result. Now i wonder why. Is that because i should use brushes like in the knosti? Is that beacause i used an anti static piece of tissue that i put dust while cleaning the record surface? Is that because i dried them with the piece of tissue? I need clues and recommandation. Thanks a lot. Arrivederci.

There's a potential risk (as found out the hard way) with pressing the carbon brush inwards and then dragging it out of the record. You can't really see what you're doing, so it's VERY easy to press the inner part of the brush too hard down on the record, and this can VERY, VERY easily cause you to scratch the record with the brush's metal-and-plastic body.

Hi, thanks for all your video! 2 questions from a beginner :) 1) I used this machine for the first time yesterday and did a quite stupid thing, I forgot to put one of the white filters on the funnel before to put back the liquid in the container :( I washed 30 used records and 15 new records (just to eliminate some static). So now the container should be filled with about 3/4 of pure liquid and 1/4 contaminated, of course I have no idea how much. Would you suggest buying a new liquid or could I re-use that more times, (this time with filter lol) ? 2) I was also thinking of buying a 2nd machine to fill with demineralized water to rinse out every record to eliminate any particel of alcohol left, not sure if this will eliminate the anti-static provided by the liquid. Thanks for any advice!
@anadialog
@anadialog 6 жыл бұрын
HI jacopo! Thank you for your comments. I will try to answer the best I can: 1) pour all the liquid in another clean container and pour it back in the original bottle WITH THE FILTER PADS. Rinse the pad and repeat. That should get it clean enough and your god to go! 2) Alcohol? I hope that the liquid you are using is alcohol FREE. Alcohol will always tend to melt vinyl, never use it even if it is in small concentrations. Yes, if you rinse it completely you will loose the antistatic effect. If you are using a good quality solution and they suggest just to let it dry I don't think you need to rinse with demineralized water. If it is a normal cleaning solution then it is probably better to do so in oder to get ALL the dirt off the record.
@jacopodiclemente6790
@jacopodiclemente6790 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for your prompt reply. 1) Yes, I will try what you suggest then. There are about 8 filters to use with KNOSTI so will do this 8 times every time with a clean filter and let's see what we get. My mistake was that I basically cleaned 45 records without pouring back the liquid, so the last 15-20 records were probably cleaned with dirty liquid. I must say though that I made 2 turns with the cleaning wheel which seems to be way less than what normal people do (5? 7?) so probably I didn't clean the records very good, but the good side may be that i didn't get the liquid as dirt as it should have been after 45 records cleaned! 2) the solution that comes with KNOSTI is what you showed in the video, they don't declare any secret ingredient but if you look then, it clearly says Ethanol... we just don't know in which % I guess. Oh, I forgot to say, sorry for my english :)
@anadialog
@anadialog 6 жыл бұрын
Woah! Jacopo! Maybe they changed the composition from that in the past? I am sure that the percentage is low. In any case, do not use it too many times on the same record. Ethanol does 'eat' plastic after a while! So yes, rinse the records. You do not want the ethanol to stick on the records. Thank you for pointing this out. I am going to write this in the video description. Apart from that, I suggest to always use ALL the pads at the same time and then clean them. Then you will have optimal filtering. P.S. You're English is great!
@jacopodiclemente6790
@jacopodiclemente6790 6 жыл бұрын
I asked tons of people using KNOSTI and they all said that this liquid seems to be the only one to not leaving residuals. Could you please double check what was the composition on yours? BTW, I was aware of alcohol risking, and looks like people also use either 2nd KNOSTI for rinsing or just throw the left water inside the KNOSTI and then fill it with demineralized water to rinse every record. I checked the bottle through light and the dirt is actually deposited at the bottom, so will definitely use filter pads as you suggested until I get a clean liquid, then will just go ahead but this time rinsing every record with water. I still don't know if the anti-static thing - which seems to be the main characteristic of KNOSTI liquid - will go away. I will re-clean my first 45 records but this time rinsing them as well. It is clear that I didn't clean them properly as I only did 2-3 turns of the cleaning wheel and in only one direction, found out that most of the people do 7-8 turns for EACH direction for each record, so definitely I could get way more than what I have so far :) Maybe I could get a carbon brush to dry-clean them before playing, so I can put back the anti-static before to play them in case they've lost the KNOSTI effect.

For heavy duty cleaning I use this: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01DTD2UOS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 zero alcohol...

On the Carbon brush wen pulling out, your pushing on the brush way to much. The bristles should not bend like in the example, my advice is the weight is enough for a proper cleaning.

I can recommend buying compressed air can at a hardware store to “spray away ” the dust that sticks too the brushes 👍🏻 . But don’t spray your stylus, it will destroy it..

I have found that, by far, the best way to wet clean on a budget is to use a cheap "shampoo/conditioner" with water and use a sureline paint edger as a brush. The conditioner in the shampoo/conditioner is almost like using "SoundGurard". And the incredibly fine fibers in the paint edger really get into the grooves. I've brought dirty records from Goodwill back from unlistenable to lieterally "Like new". I have a copy of Annie Get Your Gun (Doris Day) that was in a trashed jacket, but after cleaning it is simply amazing. And dead quiet. The secret of the brush is that not only are the fibers incredibly fine, but they are angled as you can see in this picture: www.prettyhandygirl.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/flip-up-edge-guard-shurline.jpg This is the one I use: i5.walmartimages.com/asr/11bbf098-0247-4246-8b4b-e3ca4abd4399_1.c74b4b41c6c9301591827837e21de2c2.jpeg Less than $5.

ah.. someone mentions the paint edger, thank you! I was about to add it. There is no need to put a lot of pressure on it. If you do it well, you'll see the edger "riding" the grooves toward the center label, naturally, just as the stylus do. Of course this only for wet cleaning method!And you need only one Edger, the pads are replaceable. I get mine at the Home Depot for $2.5 a pack of 2. For very dirty records, I will pre-wash them before I use this. Another trick for very crackly records, even after being cleaned and they look nice, spray some distilled water on it and ply it wet. Yes wet. You'll be surprised how silent it gets. Make sure not too much water and that it's evenly spread on the record. Here is an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHjKmnatjNieqs0

Totally wrong ! bring the record brush towards the center of the album, work WITH the groove, to push the dust to the center label, not against it, otherwise you end up with a spiraling line of dust across the LP, and then you have to repeat that process several times to try and remove the remaining dust. Also, if you use the Nagaoka rolling cleaner, leave it attached to the handle, don't do what this guy did, he just added his skin oils to the LP and the rolling cleaner. and when it comes to record cleaning machines, there is NOTHING better than using a Keith-Monks record cleaning machine.
@anadialog
@anadialog 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Elliot, don't follow theories thrown here and there. The concept of using the brush towards the center does not make very much sense. Unless you have a micro vacuum cleaner you are putting all the dirt in the center, which during playback and after when you handle it is going to go all over the place. Trust me, I have been there. Bring it out and toss it away. As I mentioned the Nagaoka BROKE. Obviously you need to use it with the handle. And no, when it comes to record cleaning, only CAVITATION reaches the label of 'nothing better', that is for sure!
@elliotcohen6488
@elliotcohen6488 5 жыл бұрын
@@anadialog Hi there, the process of using the brush and moving it with a "sweeping motion from the outside, to the center label with the groove" was a process shown to my by people from Decca Special Products Division, the inventors of the carbon fiber brush . As mentioned above, any dust NOT picked up by the brush will end up in the center label, as opposed to being spread in a spiral across the record, or a line of dust. So I disagree with your method shown. Try my way and compare.
@anadialog
@anadialog 5 жыл бұрын
Hi again, of course I have tried and that is why I personally do not recommend that method. I also have great static electricity problems and I just don't want the dust in the center. But if it works for you, no problem at all. A lot of people prefer that method. You can't just shout 'totally wrong', that's all.
@elliotcohen6488
@elliotcohen6488 5 жыл бұрын
@@anadialog If you have a static issue at home, then using the carbon fiber brush will help to reduce or eliminate static off the LP (I might suggest looking into a humidifier). There is no need to make it touch the spindle to ground it, because you are the ground while holding the brush. If you'd rather have the dust across the LP, instead of pushing what wasn't picked up, to the center where there is no music, that's up to you. I see a lot of people using the "simple" method, and then repeating the process, as you suggest and do, because the dust wasn't picked up, but rather spread all over the LP. Also, holding the brush on the record should be done without putting any pressure, to avoid bending the bristles, so that the bristles enter the groove and pick up dust. I mentioned that "it's totally wrong" because it is, and I see the same method being used by several posters. It's not until people are shown the proper way, that they understand how centrifugal force combined with the spiraling groove, creates the effect they see using their method.
