So I first DM'd during my time in prison, I had an amazing amount of fun and it was a huge time killer planning out an adventure. The most fun aspect for me was making a world, having an idea of how the adventure wanted to go, and then watching the players come up with amazing solutions to the problems and dealing with them. Yes I done wrong in life and ended up in prison, but I was able to bring joy to my fellow prisoners, make the most of our time, and as a group we learned to better cooperate and work within rules no matter how they were set.

I wish someone would do a podcast style interview with Chris about DMing. I could listen to him talk for days

I started playing D&D which is my first TTRPG experience about 1.5 years ago. I started as a player in a group with my friend as DM. My partner and her siblings wanted to get a “family” game going. I volunteered as DM as no one else wanted to. Fast forward to today about 1 year into my DM experience and dare I say I am enjoying it more? I love to play games (video/board game, etc) but what is a different and a fun experience with being a DM is being able to invite players into “my” game.

This interview is so fun and encouraging for new and old DMs alike. Could we please see a monthly series of 15-20 minutes interviews about "what happened with your DM experience during this last month"?

If you are a new DM, try to learn the rules and then incorporate the philosophy of "Whose Line is it Anyway?" Where "Everything's made up and the points don't matter." Because unless you are making it your career and trade, it's literally just make believe, just have fun and foster fun, and if the rules are in your way bend them to your will.

19:33 - 100% this, you just need to do it and accept your first few sessions might not be great but everyone will be so apprciative of the fact you stepped up to do it.

If you're thinking about running a game for the first time, do it. Just DO it! It is so much fun and the only pressure comes from your own expectations. Give yourself permission to go slow, pause to figure stuff out or backtrack, and tell your players you'll ask for their help if you need it. What have you got to lose?

When I'm introducing new players to the game, I tell them that the first rule of D&D is that everyone has fun. If someone isn't having fun, we're not playing by the rules.

HtBaDM: a player makes the mistake of using Wish to have Ultimate Power, which causes the DM jump up in Joy screaming "Free I'm Free at last! Now *you* are condemned to be the Forever DM!" He then ran off and created a Coffee-Lock.

My first session was wild. I wanted to play and dungeon mastering was the only way to play with my wife and friends. I did LMOP and the party took all the hard lefts vs following the subtle clues. Haha. It’s hard as an adult to get everyone together.

I DM’ed a one-shot as my first experience as such in the dungeons of drakkenheim world of our normal game. I was a bundle of nerves the whole time and realized after the fact that it was a total railroading situation so I could obtain a magic item I invented. It was on a boat ride through a swamp in the Roll20 vtt environment so things disappeared under the boat, the boat would be moved leaving the untroubled player tokens drowning in water, lost track of items in different layers, had players roll saving throws when they should have done ability checks. It was rough, absurd and frustrating but also so much fun and a great learning experience. If you wanna do it, just do it and expect to suck. You probably will unless you really know the rules and mechanics well. Give yourself grace and you will have fun. It’s just one of those things that you have to do so you can learn, even if you have read the core books front to back.

I remember a time, years ago, when I tried to DM the Lost Mine of Phandelver for two of my little brothers. Probably not even ten minutes in, they both died to the first group of goblins that came their way. Why? Because I forgot the number one rule of DnD: that everyone should get to have fun. I could have bent the rules and said, “Oh, the arrow missed, actually, whizzed right by your ear,” but I didn’t. I stuck too close to the rules, and the game was over before it even began. Someday, I hope to get a second chance at DMing, now that I know just a little bit more.

Chris Perkins, "I have dm'ed once or twice, today." Would love to see a video of great dm's top 5 or 10 favorite things they made but have yet to use. Would also love to see great dm's running some tough monsters. I for one don't feel I could ever run a Beholder. To me they are too powerful and every adventurer should run, not fight, if they come in contact with one.

Hey new DM here; this is my very first time about to be a dungeon master, and prior to this I’ve only officially played the game two separate times and both times didn’t get to finish the campaign. This being said, I’ve been wondering if it’s a bad or good idea to run a pre-made campaign for my first time? Keeping in mind that the three players are all new to D&D. The campaign I wanted to use is not a one off, but it’s also not intimidatingly long either.

As a player away from the game for decades, I was contemplating buying the new dungeon masters guide and player handbook and finding a game nearby. However, I quickly raised my arms in an "X" when I saw that I might have to cater to all kinds of bs instead of playing what was once the greatest game on the planet.

All my monsters fought to the death as well. Wish I would have used the monster reaction tables for BECMI and 1st Edition; the games would have been more survivable.

"Preorder the new 2024 Core Rulebook Digital & Physical bundle on D&D Beyond" Speaking of which; Weren't we supposed to be getting Beta codes for Project Sigil by now? Fall 2024 is pretty much over and it was supposed to come out in Fall 2024. It's practically winter now.

Back when I played D&D I was never once a player and was always a DM. I'd say you either are a DM or are not. I never did some goofy fake voice or corny bad acting either and DM'd for 3 different groups for several years. He did mention NPC's and I followed the Players rules (more or less) for them so in a way that was my opportunity to be a player. Also never once ran a campaign that included a "dungeon".
