An additional tip I've learned since making this video: Spray the blank with activator before you lay down your first coat of CA, and it'll lock in the dye in one go.

I enjoyed the video. I have dyed bowls before, but not on pens. Question: You mentioned using medium and light polish. What brand(s) are you using?

I didn't see on camera but how did you mix the TransTint dye? I heard you mixed it in alcohol but it looked like you were applying straight from the bottle on the applicator a few times.

I mixed the dyed with denatured alcohol according to the instructions - 30ml into 500ml of liquid. The bottle you see is just one I use to hold small amounts of mixed dye for easier use. Applying concentrate straight out of the bottle would dye your workpiece incredibly dark.

Painter's tape will work well to prevent bleeding. Just make sure your surface is sanded well, so the tape adheres well. The thicker the tape/adhesive, the better it will work. Make sure to try on a scrap piece along with your bowl. Some woods will inherently bleed more than others. Conversely, you can put some tape down on the portion you want to be colored, then put some finish on the REST of the bowl. The dye will not stick to the finished portion. Even if it sticks a little, you can just sand lightly and it'll come off, and also blend the finish.
