I learned from the same video with Zac the only difference is I have used RIT “synthetic” dye with good results. If you’re married and want to stay that way I use my old Colman stove and a cheep pot from the dollar store and dye my scales in the garage if you have the option. 👍
@minimalistedc119310 ай бұрын
I agree doing it outside the kitchen is much safer. My next project is to acid wash the blade and I'll definitely be doing that in the garage.

Glad to see im not the only one with a semi crooked civivi logo. I feel like 99% of people wouldnt notice this or care. Idk why but i always been worried about that little lip on the scale that holds the pivot in place eventually wearing out & become impossible to tighten 😭😭
@hawleyfromhell4 ай бұрын
You mean the logo doesn't set into place straight on the front? Return it. I've never had a Civivi like that.

Took me 10 minutes in the mixture to get my jade Vision FG scales a nice darkish sapphire blue. I used RIT dye for synthetics (8 to 1) and added a couple of tablespoons of vinegar. I just did some gray linen micarta scales for my Smock and, same recipe, only about a minute with the same mix ratios.

How does vinegar help?
@minimalistedc119310 ай бұрын
@@DaveSmith-lh5tk I am curious what Bob has to say as well. Vinegar lowers the PH of the solution slightly. Getting good color is a mix of time temperature and PH. Science shows color bonding happens a bit faster at a lower PH. I did not bother with adjusting the PH because I had the luxury of extra time. holding the scales in a bit longer. Nothing wrong with adding vinegar but on a non industrial scale of dying I have not found it necessary.

I've been thinking about buying a jade vision to dye since I like the satin blade.
@minimalistedc119310 ай бұрын
Give it a go. What color were you thinking about dying it?
@Gary-oi1pj9 ай бұрын
A darker blue. I guess navy. I've dyed an elementum and a freebie Kubie. I was pleased with how they came out,@@minimalistedc1193

Thinking of buying Civivi to do the exact same. How is it holding up 6 month later? Does it scratch easily?

Kizer Ti clips are perfect for the FG.

has anyone tried to paint it instead of dye? maybe like thin layer of spray paint, and do matt clear coat over that? i ordered vision fg in damascus and ivory scales, i want to change the scale color i have done paint + clear coat on my plastic phone case and it held up good so just wondering about doing g10 like that

What happened to the pot you used? Is it ruined or will the dye come out because its hot? I ordered a severn with the white g10 scales I am thinking about dyeing
@minimalistedc119310 ай бұрын
I used a cheap pot for this but it was one that was coated (nonstick teflon type coating.) The dye did not stick to the non stick surface and I just cleaned it and put back in the kitchen. I have seen stainless steels dyed. I would not use a pot you can't stand to lose. If you are worried about it Id just get a $1 pot from goodwill.

If you don’t mind, cut down the factory clip and use it as a spacer and the titanium clip fits a lot better.

Any advice on bleeding color wanting to dye my wife’s scales but don’t want to ruin any of her clothes or purse lol
@minimalistedc11939 ай бұрын
I have only dyed a few knives but I have never had an issue with the dye bleeding onto my clothes. However if you want to be extra careful the dye is water soluble. After you get done dying the scales. leave them in a glass of water for a few minutes any dye not adhered to the scales should dissolve in the water. *Not legal advice*Not responsible for angry wife.*
