Thank you for a great video. I used your method on a kids’ sweatshirt (50/50 cotton poly) in my front-loading washing machine (Whirlpool Duet Sport HT) and it worked perfectly for me, I’m so happy with the results. I boiled 4 cups of water with the salt, the dye, and the dishsoap all in one pot, and added it to the washing machine all at once before starting my “sanitary” cycle. Luckily, this particular model does not drain the basin before running. Thank you again!

Something people should know... some washers, like mine, always drain before they start washing. If you have a machine like this you'll need to start the cycle first, stop the washer once it is agitating, unlock and then add the items. More annoying but I found out the hard way and wasted a package of dye.
@l.l.78124 жыл бұрын
How do we know if our machine does this? Thank you!
@ruby1008084 жыл бұрын
I followed this method. I have never used the 90•c wash on my machine before, always using 30•c for clothes. So there I go with my cotton curtains, added pan of water with salt, 2 bottles of dark grey dye in another pan of hot water and the washing machine senses that the washer has water in as it starts and dumps it all out! £20 in UK money straight down the drain, literally. So did it again with 2 more bottles, this time letting the washer get up to heat before adding the extra pans of dye & water, and salt & water. Result- very pale grey curtains. Not good. That was another £20. I will try again but will get the hot wash started with salt in the drum and pour the Rit straight into the dispenser. I don’t think all the extra water is a good idea it dilutes the dye too much, or good for the machine as they are programmed to run with specific amounts of water.
@rachele7864 Жыл бұрын
Yep. This just happened to me. I wish I had paid attention to this comment. You can test it by pouring some water in the drum and then starting a load-do you hear it all draining away before the load starts? If so, beware.

Great video. I was also reluctant to put dye into the plastic dispenser on my machine as I was worried about staining the plastic. I have used Dylon in the past and the instructions for using Dylon dye are extremely simple and straightforward unlike the Rit dye instructions which are more long winded. Your demonstration mirrors the Dylon instructions which is much easier to follow. Sweet and simple.

Might want to note that if you have a prewash cycle automatically on your machine the dye will go down the drain as soon as that is done . Make sure it's just a normal wash.
@tatyanayuditskaya50906 ай бұрын
Yes! And my Whirlpool does not have a single setting without a pre-wash prelude programmed in it. So not sure, should I wait till the pre-wash ends, then add the dye into the dispenser? My dispenser has two compartments - one for the detergent destined for prewash and another to place the detergent to be used for actually washing. However, I see that the water flushes both compartments at the beginning of prewash! That’s why I am looking for a video that will address this. So far am glad I found your comment! This is the problem. One can just stand by and wait till prewash ends, open the compartment and add the liquid dye , the question is how the « smart » machine will react to this and will it flush the addition out right away. That would be a costly experiment :)

thanks so much for sharing! I was guessing to add water w dye in container, then into the door part.. did NOT want to use the compartment where the detergent went in. Hard to get to (under a cabinet) and it would stain that plastic part. And I had thought I had read about salt making it adhere better. Didn't know about wetting your fabric 1st. I feel much more confident about doing this now. Dying white cotton sheets green to match our room. (**I'm using two packets of powder dye) We'll see how it goes!! Once the cycle is done, did you put the curtains in the dryer? The RIT video says to re-wash the materials with detergent. I'm washing a load of t-shirts but not sure what to do once the washer cycle is finished!
@SunnysPersonalLife5 жыл бұрын
JOSLYN ROBEAU I dyed curtains which I knew would never get washed again and run so I didn’t re wash them because I didn’t want them to lose any of their darkness. If it’s T-shirt’s You need to wash them with detergent so the left over dye will run out and not run on any of your clothes in the future when you wash them with other outfits

@smartcarfor25 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing! I recently retired which impacted the usual cash flow. Thinking about dying some of my clothes that I might have passed along to a charity. I kind of wonder if maybe the dye could be added first, then the clothing followed by the salt and dish soap. Then fire up the washer for the full wash. I get that the salt needs to be dissolved so I get why you did the stove top method for that but I'm not sure why the dye itself needed water heated on the stove? Could you not begin with hot water from the tap to dilute before adding to the front load washer? Have you tried that method? I may just experiment with different methods to see how they go My other concern is cleaning the washer after the dye load is done. I ran my washer through the self cleaning cycle which takes 4 hours. I want to be 100% sure the dye is gone so I don't cause damage to my wife's clothing. Happy Wife Happy Life. Did you find that a regular wash cycle was sufficient to rid the washer of all the dye?
@SunnysPersonalLife5 жыл бұрын
I think adding water to the dye and then pouring it on top of the clothes helps to make more dye and spread it out, im not sure though. If you end up trying it your way and it works, let me know so I can add it to the description on this post as a short cut! I would definitely do a few loads to get out all of the dye, run an empty load maybe and the after that wash sone old towels or things you don’t care about and make sure no dye gets on them before you wash your wife’s stuff. Better safe than sleeping on the couch 😉

Guys please don’t just pour the dye on the fabric material in a front loader wash, I did this and it saturated in one spot and left a huge dark spot in the middle.
