How to Dye Wolf Traps

Dying traps is pretty basic usually, with wolves I add a step or two. I always handle my traps with gloves, After I boil and degrease them I do a quick dip in dye, then I seal them in a tub with green vegetation from the area I like to trap in. This provides a nice rust layer. Then I use logwood crystals and let them simmer for an hour. After that I set them out to dry. Once they are dry they go back into the container with the old dried out vegetation. I don't want green vegetation with them at this point as they will rust more if its damp in the container.

What brand traps are those? They look good. Nice black color, but you don't wax yours?

I’m not a waxer on wolf traps, an old wolfer friend of mine feels wax holds odor more and thats its harder to get em clean between catches. I wax everything else except conibears. Guess we’ll see how it goes. Those are the duke 850 pro series wolf traps. I modified em by cutting down the pans too.

@@idahomountainbuilt Whatever works is right! If I make a catch, that trap usually gets re-boiled or culled out for the season. I have re-set though because I didn't have a replacement, and still caught coyotes. I haven't caught enough wolves to really know, but I don't think it's much different.

Yep I agree, I've trapped since I was a kid but wolves are the newest thing for me too. Only time will tell how it goes. @@MuskratOutdoors
