How to Dye Yarn: Symmetrical Colorways

Dyeing a wound cake of yarn creates beautiful asymmetric long colorways, but what do you do if you want to knit up a pair of socks? In the following video, we will show you how to prepare your cake of yarn to cake-dye a symmetrical colorway (or two colors in the same "dye lot"). Before you dye the yarn, you will wind your cake with two strands of yarn, the only difference is whether you cut the yarn into two skeins (for sock yarn) or leave it as one skein (for a symmetrical colorway.)

You can dye any wool (or alpaca or silk) you want whether it's in a skein or a center pull in this way. I find skeins are nicer to dye with because they dry faster and I don't have to worry about mildew. Love the gradient you get with this method.

Before you wound the yarn on the knitty knotty, could you have put the cake on something like a toilet paper holder and wound both sides at one time? The cake would roll freely and you wouldn't have to untangle it as you wound. Love your videos, they are most helpful.

Can you use this method to dye wool yarn in a skein from the store? Technically it's still the same as a center pull ball, you just have to find the other end. The reason I ask is because I don't have a yarn swift and I'm unemployed so I don't really have a way to get one. I want to hand dye some wool I bought for a friend for Christmas.

Just fantastic! I'm REALLY looking forward to dying my first yarn. I just need the right kind of yarn that will take the dye etc. so I'm watching,reading etc & I have a little experience with dying .. But not yarn! I have always loved variegated yarns and it's something that's a bit of a bone a I have is if you want to make say booties or socks they will look totally different with some variegated yarns.. If you can find wool and nylon yarn it's better because the nylon dyes like wool. Acrylic can be "dyed", but it's more like a paint.
