Welcome to Electric Car Australia and our latest video showing just how easy and cheap it is to charge an electric vehicle or EV at home using a regular Australian Power Point. We demonstrate charging our MG ZS EV using a regular 10 amp power point and also discuss using a 15 amp AC charger which delivers approximately 60% faster charging than a normal 10 amp outlet.
We aimed to keep this video simple, providing an introduction or 101 lesson on ‘Home Charging an EV or Plug in Hybrid’, but as usual we get a bit off track and make it longer than it should be. Our excitement takes over and we just get further and further into the detail, so apologies!
We briefly explain the difference in alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) but the focus of this video is AC EV charging. We show the different types of AC EV charging plugs available globally. Historically the most popular was the type 1 or J 1772, found mainly on USA and Japanese electric vehicles. Recently the most popular type of EV charging plug for EV manufacturers is the type 2 or Mennekes. The type 2 charger plug is becoming the global standard, type 1 is expected to be phased out over the next 5 yrs.
Next up, we showcase two different types of portable chargers (or Granny leads), one of which is usually included when you buy a new electric car (or plug in hybrid) and we cover the pro’s and con’s of each charger. While the benefit of the 10amp version is it can plug into any of the millions of standard power points in Australia, the downside is it delivers only 10 - 12 klms of EV charging per hour.
Given average daily distances travelled by passenger vehicles in Australia is only 36 klms we ask, do most Australian’s need a special home EV charger?
If doing regular regional road trips or daily driving of more than 100 klms you might consider a faster electric car charger. Next step up is a 15 amp Portable or Granny Charger with the advantage of providing 18 -20 klms EV charging p/h. However the negative is 15 amp outlets are not as common, but are still wide spread and once you start looking or asking you will find them, often available where large appliances, machines or tools are used.
Even quicker EV home and workplace charging options are available but we don’t cover them in this video on EV home charging. Stay tuned for Video 2 in our electric car charging video series for this information. In video 2 we will showcase various type 2, AC home chargers including going through pricing and install costs for the chargers, showing how to use them and the time each one takes to charge different electric cars.
Next we plug in our MG ZS EV using the 10 amp portable EV charger to demonstrate just how easy, convenient and cheap (free if you’re on Solar) it is to charge and electric car at home. While the EV is charging we talk other relevant info and give you some tips to decide what sort of home charging best suit your EV, lifestyle and driving habits. It’s often these simple things which are overlooked early on but could save you thousands of dollars if put into your early EV researching and decision making.

Thanks for a really informative video (as usual!). I wish I'd seen this before I outlaid $2K on my Wallbox Pulsar Plus. The MG recommended charger was installed in anticipation of the MGZSEV arrival, but the car was delayed 6 weeks by quarantine problems in Melbourne. Love the car, but have had huge problems with the Wallbox turning itself off after a few minutes of charging. Still trying to resolve this issue, so are relying on the MG granny charger - it's fine.

Hi Steel, thanks for watching. Yes you could plug the 10 amp charger into a timer, just make sure it is a good quality one and rated for 10 amps 'continuous' as the charger will draw full current while charging. Alternatively you could buy a home charger like the Zappy which has timer capability built in but will set you back $2k+ inc install.

Informative video. But keep in mind the rules you give around keeping your car between 20 and 80% charge doesn't apply to the LFP (lithium ferrous phosphate) battery that's in the updated MG ZS EV. They don't degrade from that the same way an NMC battery will... hopefully they're a battery that outlasts the rest of the car!

Hi Ben, thanks for the comment. Your right that chemistry isn't as sensitive but when we filmed it wasn't available in the MG or even Tesla M3. As a general rule we encourage owners to use the 80/20 rule as a good habit to get into because no matter the chemistry I think it will prolong battery life. In most driving cases it's a non issue anyway as people just charge when convenient. As with most things, continually running up to max then to zero want last as long as leaving a bit of capacity at each end. Thanks for watching.

Hi, thanks for your video, very useful. One question: I charge my ZS EV overnight, but I never get to 100%, because I usually have to use it to go to work and it hasn't finished charging (I take it off which is about 90-95%). Do I have to charge it to 100% to do the balancing? How often should I have it do the balancing? Is it wrong not to? Thank you very much

Hi, I am in NZ and have a ZS on order. Thanks for giving me some real life numbers e.g. it taking an hour to get 12km. I would like to use a timer, so I can take advantage of night electricity rates, you mentioned it needs to be 10amps 'continuous' can you recommend one? Is a smart wifi plug that you can set a timer on OK, as some of them also have energy monitoring, or is that not necessary as it appeared in the video that it shows you on the charger how many watts you have used? Thanks, Vicki
@ElectricCarAustralia
@ElectricCarAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Vicki, thanks for watching and the question. Congrats on ordering an EV. Sorry I can't recommend a timer but I would check with your electrician as the timer will need to be good quality and capable of handling the continuos 10 amp current draw. There is a real risk of overheating/fire if it's not up to the task. Yes the portable charger shows consumption but doesn't record it so you need to see/record it manually. Thanks again an please 'Subscribe' if you haven't, it really helps the channel. Cheers.

Are you getting the 2022 updated version? If so, there's an app that you can use to set charge hours on (and other things) also keep in mind that they have a different battery chemistry that means you don't have to be so worried about keeping it between 20 and 80% and doesn't really degrade from 100% charging. Big positive, to me!

Very nice informative video. In my case, the 7.3 kw/h charger+ install came free with the car, and I live in an apartment building, with no wall socket close to my parking space. They had to run close to 50 meters of wire just to hook it up to the building's power. They added a separate meter for my charger so I pay that utility to the building management company separately from my regular electricity bill. Also, don't forget the MG ZS needs to have cell balancing done every now and then. I do have a question. Is it ok to charge the car to full then drive? As I understand, what's bad is not charging to 100%, but keeping it at 100% all the time. I owned my ZS for 6 weeks. So far, I only charged it when the range drops below 80km, let it balance the batteries overnight, then drive it. I drive it once a week about 150 km in one day. The rest of the week my mom drives it 40 km a day as I work from home. I try to charge at night because ambient heat reaches 30-35 degrees C during the day and that is not good for the battery either.
@ElectricCarAustralia
@ElectricCarAustralia 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dima, thanks for watching and subscribing. Great to hear you got the home charger included with purchase. Your correct with the battery, try not to repeatedly charge to 100% and leave it fully charged without using. EV batteries are most happy if state of charge (SOC) is kept between 20% to 80% of full capacity. So charging below 80 klms range left, as you are, is perfect you could go down to around 50klms range remaining, when the first orange battery light comes on, without any impacts on battery. Again in everyday use it's a good idea to only charge to around 80% if possible. You can manage this manually by turning off, with a timer or scheduled start/stop on your home charger depending on model. I would not recommend charging to 100% all the time, only when your going on a road trip or need that additional range. In summary 20-80% SOC in everyday use will ensure your battery lasts as long as possible but charging outside this when needed is fine, just not all the time. Having said that MG recommend a 'balancing' charge every 4-6 weeks using your home or granny charger. This means charging to 100% and leaving for a couple of additional hours to balance the battery cells. I would worry to much about the heat, the car's battery management system (BMS) will manage this. I would charge when the most renewable energy (wind/solar/wave/hydro) is in the grid or you have the cheapest power. I hope this helps. By the way, what Country/ City are you in?
@dgurevich1
@dgurevich1 3 жыл бұрын
@@ElectricCarAustralia Thank you for your reply. I'm from Israel and we don't really have renewable energy sources yet and my tariff is fixed. The other reason I prefer night charging is load on the grid. During hot days, the electric company experiences record demand because everyone uses their AC so I leave the car unplugged. With the home charger, the car will show me a timer on how long it will take to charge. I can set an alarm 1-1.5 hours before that and unplug it.

I have a 10 yr old PHEV and instead of a physical lock interrupting the power sets off the car's alarm. I'd have thought that would be a good feature to keep even with the physical lock as it stops people from mucking around with your charger so you end up with no charge when you're expecting to come back to a fully charged battery. A cable disconnected from the powerpoint end is just as useless as one disconnected at the car end.

Hi Elizabeth, thanks for the comment. Yes I guess you cant cover all scenarios for stupidity. Lets just hope when charging from a 10 or 15 amp power point in a public space no-one unplugs the EVSE. Hi Ali, thanks for the comment! Yes, car buying and particularly EV purchases are a very personal thing. Good luck and enjoy whichever vehicle you choose.
@btfairweather
@btfairweather 2 жыл бұрын
It's okay if you don't want an EV. But just a few facts to consider. A RAV4 hybrid would be about the same cost as the MG ZS EV. You still have a petrol engine to maintain and service and is much more likely to have mechanical issues. Based on how most people use their car you'd probably only need to charge it once a week, so it's hardly worrying about charging every night. A lot of people's worries about batteries are based on things like the Leaf as the batteries will not last as long as the car and their is no cost effective way to replace it... But modern batteries and thermal management mean you should have a battery that lasts the useful life of the car.

Hi, Yes you can, although it can depend on the EV you have. The first gen MG ZS EV I have can do a balancing charge any type 2 charger up to a maximum of 7kW. You will need to leave the EV plugged in for a longer period so I would choose a charger not used much or out of peak times so you don't have other drivers waiting to charge. Also if you regularly charge with 7Kw chargers instead of say 50kW CCS you wont need to balance as often. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

For most EV's yes! AC type 1 & 2 charging (slow charging) is much easier on the batteries therefore extends their life.

I agree that, in most cases 10 amp, household, powerpoint charging is adequate for most EV owners. I bought a BYD ATTO 3 Extended Range a month ago. The only semi-regular, long-range driving I do is a trip from Bundanoon to Umina to see my Mum. That's a round trip of 416 km and is covered by one full charge with careful driving. Normally, when I get down to 80% charge, I plug in for six, sunny hours (I have a PV system) to charge up. That's roughly an 80km top up. I haven't yet done a fast charge but that is what I'll do when on a road trip. There are plenty of charging site apps to get me through that challenge. Thanx, Greg, for your excellent video. :-)

Hi Greg, thanks for the comment. I'm working on a video of the Fronius Wattpilot Go, a new mobile/home charger with lots of charge modes, Inc solar only. Keep your eye out for it. Cheers

If your 10 amp charger was mounted in the front of your car then you can plug straight into any wall plug in front of your car and trickle charge 23hrs every day. Most vehicles are parked 23hrs every day. Say 500mm of plug lead available only. Then if you forget to unplug as you back out of your park space the plug would just be pulled straight out. Ezi pezi 😊😊 A $60 installed wall plug.

@@ElectricCarAustralia have ago, I am not an electrician and do not have an EV yet. I believe that battery management is not needed with trickle currents. Use a cheap short extension lead. Put the charger in the frunk and run the disposable cheap extension lead out the front under the bonnet. Just my thinking. The extension of the idea is to supply the home, by a good industrial designed bumper plug and have selfplug-in V2G like the home robotic vacuum cleaner. Hahaha Hahaha 👍

Every recharge looks like a petrol bowser hose. And has the familiar feel. Horse and cart thinking. First auto mobiles looked like Horse carriages. Some keep going to induction charging complexities and $ solutions. KISS. Keep it simple. Most vehicles are parked 23hrs every day. Rapid charges will be on the main roads and at corner stores and community batteries. If needed. I can imagine in emergency conditions driving to the community battery and filling up to run the home, Hahaha

Hi Jo, yes, once the car is fully charged, if left on it will do a balancing of the battery cells then switch off. Thanks for the comment.

Granny charger option is fine if you don't need to charge in a hurry. Personally I stick with 15amp though as 10 is just way too slow.

Gday Greg. Thanks heaps. A quick Q. Just bought a Kia Niro EV. Can you safely use a general house 240V extension cord to connect to the granny charger provided with the car. Cheers. Frenchy.

Congrats on the purchase. I'm not an electrician so can't give advice. Personally though I have used a lead but bought a 15 amp one and had the 15 amp male plug replaced with a 10 amp plug. Practically this means I've oversized the cable but I don't use it on a regular basis.

Hi I also own a eniro I run my granny charger over a 30m extension lead my plug at home is 240w 32amp. I used a 1.5mm lead on the extension the plug gets warm but doable I now use thicker extension lead and went to 2.5mm thickness just to keep the plug from going warm. Better to buy thicker extension leads and I think it’s safe for even 10amp setting on the charger. I would not try this if I brought one of the type 2 leads but for the charger that comes with the car it’s safe

Hi James, it sounds like there is a problem with the "handshake", i.e. the communication between the car and charger. I have been told if you disconnect and reconnect the 12volt battery this can sometimes fix handshake issues but I haven't personally tried myself so can't vouch for it. Worse case, might be a trip to your local EV mechanic or back to MG. Let us know how you go. Cheers

It depends on how much you drive each day. If less than 80klms you probably don't need a dedicated home charger.

Your comment about all EV's come with a "granny" charger does not apply to Tesla anymore, Elon in his wisdom has removed their UMC charger from new cars, you now have to buy one at $550 if you need one.

Hi Ray, thanks for the comment. Yes always a risk with a video at a point in time. Bit of poor form on Tesla's part, too soon to remove these yet given the work needed in charging infrastructure.

It shows you how easy and convenient electric cars are... They are safe , clean and efficient. Why would you have a smelly ice car? Cause the government wants those oil taxes. That's why EVs are expensive to buy in Australia. Remember what the PM said, "Electric cars can't tow" What a lie. The Liberal party takes donations from the fossil fuel industry. Think about that, this coming election.
