I never thought of tilting the knife to align with the hair they way you did so that you don't cut hair when cutting through the hide. Anything that avoids cutting hair is effort well spent as anybody who has ever spent a few hours picking hair off venison can attest to. Thanks for the pointer!

2 things to critique on this otherwise well put together tutorial. One is just to make skinning by hand easier. If you roll the skin hair out you get a lot better grip to be able to pull it off the carcass. You can even power all the way from the back legs to the front legs if as you pull you put your elbow into the hide right by the body and use it for leverage to push down with your weight. Comes away quick, easy and clean. Number 2 did you realize that you cut through the spinal column when you removed the tail? A lot of people in these CWD Zones don't even think about the tail being part of the spinal column. Prion diseases like CWD aren't something to take chances with. So cutting through the tail at the beginning of butchering can potentially cross contaminate the entire deer. Thank you for doing all your informative videos.

If in cwd area I wouldn’t cut the tail u til the end of and maybe use a diff knife since tail is part of spinal columns and prions for cwd are in spinal fluid brain fluid and lymph nodes in the rump near femoral artery on both sides. The lymph nodes in the neck are close to the trachea and lower muscles of the neck

I have used this method for years, but learned from you today. I learned a way to remove the hind leg meat while it is hanging. Thank You!

Props to NDA. Great video! I always use a smaller blade for my field dressing and skinning. Family and friends would try and "knife-shame" me, but a big handle and a small blade is so much better for this kind of work!

As stated in the video, when I started hunting I did all my own processing with no teacher to tell me what to do. I had no idea where the tenderloin was so threw out many of them with the skeleton when I got done. Makes me sick to think of all that tender meat the local varmints got to eat out behind our barn. :(

That contraption as you called it. What is it's real name and where do you get one?

Common names you could search for include "skinning claw" and "hide puller" or even "skinning tool" and you should find several options for sale.
