I know it's pedantic, but in case it confused someone else, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 are chroma subsampling options, not color spaces

Finally making the leap into Davinci Resolve after filming a very stressful beach wedding this past weekend and then coming home and dealing with trying to get my project started in Premiere Pro for the past 4 days, I am finally done with Premiere Pro. After years of torture with crashes and freezes and overpriced/underperforming software, I took the leap into downloading Davinci Resolve and of course when I go to import my footage this is the first thing I run into, yikes! Hopefully this is my only issue other than knowing I will struggle with color grading but I am willing to learn!

I record 10 bit 422 (XAVC S 4K) in my FX30 and have never had a problem in my Resolve 18.5 free version. What am I missing?

Works with my older AVS4U converter! That also allows me to convert videos to 2K or 1900x1260 for people that don't have hi res pc's, saves file size and overkill.

This is confusing becuase I am using the free version of davincii too and I can see all my 422 fottage without any issues on my MACBOOK. However, my brother CANT see the footage becuase he edits on a PC. Any feedback on this. Is this issue only happening to PC users?

it worked for me but i had to use H.264 (x264) format and for next videos change your settings in your phone to use h.265

Very good helpful information but for anyone working with 4k footage or anything above 10gb per file. Prepare for LONG wait times. At that point $300 is worth the hours it takes to encode that stuff.

Very often video conversion gets a mistake and I get 44 bytes file as a result. But sometimes from the 2-3-4+ attempt it does it. Did somebody has this mistake and know how to fix it?

My video was already 4:2:0 so naturally this fix did nothing for me. It still shows "Media Offline" but the audio is playing. What should I do? Edit: The original video is .mov H.265 Main 10 L4.0 (whatever that means) and the converted version is .mp4 H.265 Main 10 L5.0 but neither of them work. I tried downloading the HEVC Video Extension but it didn't help.

When I shoot in 4.2.2 10bit (140Mbps) with my Sony A7S 3, I can't read the files on my Mac with QuickTime Player. Also, in 10bit 60 FPS (200Mbps) - I can't read the file on QuickTime Player and Final Cut Pro is very laggy when reading the file. What to do? Thank you very much :)

Hi when I import 10bit video file created with Nvidia Shadowplay (I have a HDR display) the colors show up very light, like its imported in 8bit. The source file plays in 10bit color fine in my AVC player. I did try a converted version using the handbreak tool, but same result. I have also upgraded to 19.0, but that did not make a difference. I use Win 11. Is there a setting I'm missing?

since we are changing the codec to 420, does that mean that we are losing the dynamic range from 422 or since we filmed it in 422 we still have the dynamic color range even if we convert it to 420

I never understood people saying the free version cant handle 10bit footage, becuase ive mainly used my drone footage. My Air 3 films in 10bit DLOG, and that footage works fine in davinci, funnily enough.

Yeah. I have the Mac mini m1 16gig 1tb ssd. I edit my fs5 footage which is 10 bit 422, in 1080p only. 4k it's 8bit. I use the free version of davinci resolve 19. I have no problem, it does run a lil bit slow when running dehancer with an edit as well. It slightly skips that's it. Idk what camera you're shooting with. Also I dnt have to worry about this, I can move the mxf file right into davinci resolve. Probably because the fs5 is old.

I think older codec work fine, as well as 6k clips, a while ago I downloaded some 6k red-raw clips and they worked fine on windows. I just received a 6k 4.2.0 camera but I haven't tested it yet. 4k 4.2.2 doesn't.

OR...just record in 4.2.0 10 bit right in camera....as long as you can handle HEVC codec with XAVC HS 4K and you'll have 60p, 24p, or 120p as options. If you need 30p for some reason, you are out of luck and have to go back to XAVC S

The challenge still remains that you have to now Color grade those HDR10bit files in Resolve - quite a challenge - fine if they were from an iphone but if from another source there are no standard LUTs to be able to do it automatically or am I missing a second trick you didn't mention please????

Use Proxys, Sony cameras can record proxys along the main archive. You use them to edit, and export using the full size files.

Thx for the information. I did try and it works but it takes 70 minutes for a 3.7 gb file to convert and it was only 5 minutes of recording on a GoPro12. I plan longer recordings and those would take half a day. Is there another free editing tool that can handle 10 bits?

Tried DaVinci years ago, couldn't make it work with a Nas server. Give it another shot now, this nonsense of the 10-bit. As hard as I hate Adobe, I can't stand how complicated Blackmagic made this software. Some of us aren't artist and just need to work and get paid, can't waste time and money with this workarounds. Great work with the video tough, liked and subscribed cause I have nothing against you man. Just frustrated with this softwares.

This happens with Canon CLog3. Other 10 bit videos like DJI pocket 3 do not have such problem. Another solution is to switch from Windows 10/11 machine to Mac machine(I tested in M1). So far, it's not really true that DaVinci Resolve Free version does not support 10 bit video but in fact it's due to Operating system.

However, bear in mind that h265 is literally one of the worst codecs to edit in. Editing is painfully sluggish even on stronger hardware if you follow this path.
