Great tutorial, very helpful. My first reel was Smax3, couldn't fall in love in baitcasting..2nd reel was Shimano Caenan with centrifugal brakes, fell in love with baitcasting since then. Now I'm on Slx DC XT, loving it! I take backlashes/overruns as part of the sport; look on the bright side- the more you backlash the bigger pro you are at picking out those pesky birdsnests.

If you want to actually learn how to use a baitcaster I recommend a regular baitcaster. The DC system won't allow you the ability to feather the spool freely.

@@Shurmash I learned on classic (centrifugal&magnetic) baitcasters; only when I gained confidence and thumb control I switched to DC reels..I still use my "old" reels

Thanks for the vid!! I need a refresher every once in a while. I have several different bait casters and find it easier to just stick with one and get used to it for about any kind of bait I throw.

I’m using 40lb braid on my new abu Garcia baitcaster with a topwater frog and a lot of the time I get that overrun where it locks up in mid air with a birds nest but when I turn up my brakes it almost gets no distance for beings heavier lure. In this video you seem to be casting 4x as far as mine can throw and I’m not sure how to fix it. I also feel like if I try to put a little more ummph into my cast it overruns more often so there’s like no middle ground

Are you using braid with no coating? I suggest smoothing out your cast stroke emphasizing on a smooth wrist snap at the end. And keep practicing until it becomes 2nd nature

Something to keep in mind is if youre doing mono to braid, make sure you're using the same diameter mono to braid. 10lb mono is usually the same diameter as 40lb braid. Always check the line specs. Also, if you're tying braid directly to your spool make sure the drag star is really tight. If you're spooling braid, and can pull line out easily; it'll blow up when casted. Because there might be loops or uneven line layered down. The only problem I have with braid is that it burns your thumb after a multiple casts lol. I use 8x now because of it.

Hi. Have you seen the new QingYu FF01 30S reel? Should it be considered for weights less than 1 gram? Only embarrassed by the deep spool and an unknown manufacturer.

Casting with 3'-5' of line will greatly reduce backlashes because it slows down the transfer of energy from your rod to your lure. You have to think of it like a trebuchet. If the sling is too short the acceleration is too quick leading to a backlash. Tight lines out there!
