How To Easily Identify Speaker Wire Polarity(Positive & Negative)

How to easily identify the polarity (+ or -) of UNMARKED home stereo sound system speaker wires, or speaker wires you're unsure of the polarity without removing the speaker from the housing to look at the connections. Many times people will discover speaker wires sticking out of a wall(especially in a newly purchased home) which will connect to a surround sound system, but those wires may not be properly marked. In this video I also explain how to get rid of "Volume Control Crackling" in audio output.

That's a good tip. We used to often do this when I worked in the live sound industry, we tended to use fresh 9 volt batteries as usually we were dealing with 15" drivers. Sometimes after getting one back after sending it for a re-cone they would be wrong. The accepted standard is +ve will make the speaker push out when connected correctly, as you state, but for some reason JBL always had used the opposite! The speaker would pull in when connected to the +ve marked terminal! So usually we connected these drivers "backwards" so they would be correct!

Thanks for the helpful post. As an aside, I was surprised you did not give an explanation for the neodymium magnet on the negative pole of the AA battery. And the attachment of the alligator clip to it almost slipped from view without notice. I have used magnets in this way, but someone looking for a speaker polarity test might also be unfamiliar with that technique.

Some wire pairs will have a few strands of different color on one of the but usually very hard to see. I have never seen paired "zip wire" that did not have an outer identifier that was either ribbed or a single raised line verses the smooth jacket next to it. This is true for clear and or color insulation. Then there is the stranded wire with a fabric marker hiding under the insulation. Love the battery test, been using this for ever

So you have to take out & separate the woofer to make the positive polarity confirmation? I have 16" Infinity woofers with fairly big magnets. Is there a way I can test the speaker 'red' wire input, which I've always assumed is positive, but this obviously isn't always the case. What about receivers, amps, pre amps? Are we to assume there marked speaker inputs + & - are always correct or no? Apologize if I'm missing something, but I've had high end home stereo equip for 25 years & car subs without issue..Except for neighbors calling the cops because of the bass..I'm not mocking, as I'm glad you brought this to my attention..I did watch the video twice & thank you for it..Maybe I'm making it more complicated then it is..Thx

Dude!!! You're absolutely NOT showing how to test the WIRES that "look the same" for polarity... You're simply showing how to test the speaker connectors for polarity... And the worst thing is because of the misleading title, & the extra credit course on cleaning potentiometers, we have to wait 4 minutes until we find out that you honestly think that by directly feeding the speaker at it's inputs, you're somehow proofing polarity of the amplifier, or radio, or whatever the audio feed signal source might be with the identical wires hooked to it.. Guys, this is the 4th vid I've watched that's not seen a difference between the words "wire" & "speaker", so here's what I'm going to just try: (Wish me luck) Assuming your wires are unhooked from any speaker, & accessible. 1. Turn on your audio source, & DO NOT HOOK UP A SPEAKER TO THE WIRES.. 2a. Take a test light & touch a grounding source someplace.. (anything bare metal & hooked to the chassis on a rig, or run your own.. then touch one of the wires until your test lead lights up... You've touched the positive. OR... 2b. Take a multimeter set it to continuity. Touch the 2 leads to make sure you can hear the beep. Touch one probe to a grounding source. Touch the other to one or the other of the wires until you hear your beep. The beepy one is your negative WIRE. Not the speaker connector, but the WIRE.. Imagine that. Hey?

@electronicsNmore 3 жыл бұрын
LOL. Seriously? You disconnect the wires from the sound system, then connect the battery to the wires! After doing that, you'll know which wire is + or -.
@joesmania
@joesmania 3 жыл бұрын
@@electronicsNmore 🤣🤣🤣.. Seriously? So you're trying to put some speakers in the front doors of a work vehicle where there is nothing but a hole & a pair of cut wires. How does that reply help in this scenario? The title says how to EASILY tell polarity of speaker WIRES, or something very similar.. There must be a way to do it without disassembly of the dashboard, & disconnecting the audio wires & using the battery on that end because easy ain't that.. And it still wouldn't tell you if + or - is coming through that wire after you hook the harness back to the stereo... It's still just telling you how your speaker is polarized because unless you're unplugging the wire from something red or labeled +, it's going to be what the pole of the battery you're touching it to. By testing the wires, we're really testing the output of the source, which isn't always cut & dry in automotive audio systems like it is in home theater systems.. To be "DIY-easy" it really needs to be tested right there where you have 2 cut wires in a mounting cavity. BTW: From the research I did, the "audio gurus" say it doesn't even matter as long as you have all (or both) wired the same way so the sound waves don't cancel each other out before they hit the ear hole.. I don't know. But, point is when people are looking to figure out the polarity for the speaker wires, they may already know how to do the speaker poles, & not have ready access to the back of the audio source, & even if they did, in vehicle stereos, the speaker wires are often not labeled, nor separate. It's just a bunch of wires on a multi pin harness plug all mixed in together so it's anyone's guess. Also, with the speaker wires sometimes they have multiple branch offs along the way, & can change color by the time they are at the hole where a speaker once was.. Anyways, that's way, way more of an invasive procedure than just doing some sort of simple test.. So, I assume all electrical signals in any speakers wires on any system are going to be DC in a home or an automotive system?. But not sure if a multimeter would pick that signal up like a steady flowing normal DC circuit like a lightbulb or whatever.. I'm no audio expert & only know enough electrical to be dangerous, but I do have common sense, & I know what won't help me find the answer I'm looking for in the application that I'm seeking answers in... An LED only works with continuity in 1 direction like most standard diodes. Do you think a small (like 5 to 10mm) raw LED would work for quick & easier than disassembly of stuff??

Remove the end connected to the sound system, and wrap the wires around each post of a 9V battery, next take a DMM and set it for DC volts. Touch the DMM probes to the end of the speaker wire and see it you get a POSITIVE reading. If you do, you'll know the positive is on the correct spot of the 9V battery marked pos. You can also look closely at the side of the wire. One side is smooth, the other has ridges. The ridge side is POS.

@craignehring
@craignehring 9 жыл бұрын
bazrazin1 Speakers that have a stacked magnet assembly are for use near Cathode Ray Tube monitors (CRT) The smaller one is glued on top of the bottom one in an attempt to cancel out the magnetic field that normally surrounds the speaker, this second magnet is in the reverse polarity of the other. Normally if left unchecked, these magnetic fields in close proximity to the monitor it can cause the electron beam to stray and or magnetize the monitor. The result can be poor image, both in shape and color on the monitor. Flat screen LCD displays do not have an issue with stray magnetism .The larger magnet performs the basic function to supply the pole piece within the speaker with magnetic energy that the voice coil can work with.

There is a slight difference in sound quality if the speakers are not wired properly, but what is really important is that ALL the speakers are wired exactly the same. If you do not wire them the same(+ & -), then one speaker will be pushing out at the same time another is pushing inward.

To tell which is positive / which is negative: Multi Meter in DC Volts-- Set too 200M setting (200mv)... play the stereo with pos/neg lead from multi meter , attached to the 2 unknown-which-is-pos-or-neg speaker wires, if there is a positive and always remaining positive fluctuating value. You found pos and neg. If its a negative fluctuating value, you still found pos and neg HOWEVER you currently have the positive lead on the meter attached to the neg SPEAKER WIRE coming through the door . Not being rude or anything (to the video poster) just trying to give another method that is (in my opinion) easier explained over words and easier to do in real life. :D
