Insects and grubs can cause major damage to a lawn in a short amount of time. However, there's an easy way to prevent this with one application.
I'll also go over what I'm seeing with the tall cut on the fescue, what it looks like cut shorter, and difficulties getting a clean mow on the ryegrass.

Thank you, thank you for mentioning the shredding grass tips 9:40. I've been staring at my lawn wondering about this myself. I kept adjusting the blade/height on my Swardman trying to get a clean cut. In the back of my head I was thinking "rye gets rough in the spring" but it's nice to have the confirmation.

Same thing with my rye. I marked my calendar as a reminder of this "phase" so I don't stress over it. My layman garage beer theory is that it wants to produce seed so either there's some energy redirection going on and/or the seed stalks are interfering with the cut, but they're harder to see with reel hoc.

Hey Ryan, in regards to the fescue mowing height. I'm from Aus and this winter I did something a bit different (or stupid) and chose to overseed my Bermuda with Barenburg RTF rather than rye, bit of an experiment as I want to see how the RTF goes come summer in some shady areas the Bermuda doesn't do so well. Anyways one of the things that sold me on the RTF as long grass is really not our thing here, was the mowing height. Barenbrug recommend 40-50mm so 2 inches at most and it looks really good, is finer than other tall fescues as well. So far pretty impressed, I even accidentally scalped an area to nearly dirt and the infant plant just grew back no problem, an interestingly not only survived but that particular spot is now tilling out quicker. From somebody who was very much not a fescue fan I'm actually pretty impressed. To early to tell if it does actually spread but that I'm not so concerned with, it's an interesting breed of fescue for sure! Due to my lack of experience with cool season grasses I'm not sure if this is unique to RTF but maybe you could try pushing your fescue down to that 1.5-2inch height. It really does look so much better than 3

As far as the cutting height goes… mower weight plays into that as well. Two mowers may measure the same on concrete for example but lighter mowers float more and heavier mowers compress grass more and will cut lower. This is especially true and the difference increases as turf density gets very dense. 👍

I comment on something unrelated. As far as fescue cut height. I did a Reno on the front and side yard with KBG and rye. The back was mostly fescue. I didn’t smoke off the back yard but for 3 years I have aerated and overseeded with kbg and rye and have mowed it at 2" (2 to 3 times a week) and the fescue that is still there has done just fine. I was hoping by this point with the kbg and rye oversees and cutting the fescue “to short” it would have died off. Nope! I think the kbg filling in and taking ground the last few years is where I may have lost most of the fescue along with the aeration pulling some out. Still looks great with all three mixed in.

Anything I can do to keep those areas from drying up and losing too many nutrients to reseed in early September? Thanks.

Ok Mr Knorr… I have watched for quite a while. I always watch (you and others) looking for a tip I don’t know and love watching your results. This video you brought the keystone light in at the end. I’m a guinness extra stout guy. But… back when you were on Thirsty Thursday, you and DeMay were going on about keystone light. So this weekend we are having some people over and I thought… Why not? Now if you have tried Guinness, comparing keystone light isn’t fair. Totally different but I will say, I tried one pretty cold. It is very light, refreshing but not what I’m use to but I will say, not disappointed. I’ll say I may keep both on hand. Especially since mine is $10 for 6 and I got 15 keystone light for$8! I only have one here and there so this may work it’s way into my rotation this summer and when a neighbor stops and we have a beer, I can go to these and they won’t be drinking my more expensive beer. This is why I watch. You may pick up a tip here and there. Sometimes not lawn related. Keep the great content going and looking forward to see what happens at the new property over the next few years

What does the numbers mean on a spreader. I used to think it was lbs per 1000sq ft.. like the number 7 would mean it would spread 7 pounds per 1000 sq ft. So on and so forth. Now i know that cant be correct because that would all depend on prill size which varies greatly depending on product being spread
@andrewszabo1552
@andrewszabo1552 2 жыл бұрын
Most spreaders go up to 10, but if you find one that goes up to 11 - that's one better for spreading fertilizer. JK can't help to get a spinal tap reference in. The number value is relative to the manufacturer. Most of them have it set so that the higher value, the more product that is allowed to be dispersed over the same distance. What Ryan was showing was how to estimate your spreader setting to use by weight of product when your spreader isn't listed on the bag.
