Hi Brian, thanks for the videos. I did not know that there was different variations of BT. I dont know which BT is used on plants at growers and nurseries, but one year we ran out of parsley to feed the black swallow tail catterpillars-butterflies that my wife raises, so we had to buy some parsley at a nursery. The parsley was marked organic "treated w/BT" and sold as safe or "untreated with pesticides". Unfortunately after eating this parsley all of the black swallowtail caterpillars were dead or dying within 24 hours. My wife also raises Monarchs. I dont know if this info is helpful to you or anyone but our lesson was to do a lot more homework on what we buy and what we eat as this is sold for human consumption.

It's all about the strain of BT; I guess that's all I can say. I know that different strains affect different organisms. Just hypothesizing here but the strain used in the nursery might have targeted caterpillars because most people buy parsley for cooking food and not for feeding caterpillars. :/ There does seem to be plenty of research out there indicating Bt is not harmful to humans... but even still; I wouldn't willingly eat the stuff either. For the lawn though, I feel more comfortable putting this down than chemicals because of our kids, animals, garden, etc.

I bought Rue plants for the Giant Swallowtails from a private home. Was assured it was pesticide etc. free. Boom - they started dying instantly. I literally put them in a strainer and ran the faucet. Saved all but one. I realize that doesn't make sense but... IDK?

Hi Brian, I'm new here but already a fan of your lawn care videos. Quick question, and I finished reading your article ('When is it Too Late to Apply Grub Control to Your Lawn?'). If I have a Grub problem, but missed treating it in the Fall.... When Spring arrives (here in zone 6B) do I aerate than hit my in lawn with a curative, than use a preventative; or, do I just use the preventative? Thanks, appreciate your response.

It the end of July here in Kansas and for about the last week I am seeing Japanese beetles flying all around my Bradford pear tree and some dropping into my fescue..I bought the 24 hour kill stuff..when should I put that down? Thanks.

I use Grub x in early May. Its pollinator friendly, I used Sevin one early spring in the past and that summer I didn't see any beautiful butterflies or bumble bees. I learned my lesson,

I did apply some grub control in jun-July (bio-adv ) . I was recently pulling crab grass and saw little white grubs - from what I believe you said is it would be too late to apply a product? . And going forward I want something more natural bc of my 3 cats

My lawn is clearly damaged in a couple of areas but I waited until my sprinkler system was fixed. The technician said he saw bugs so I imagine the damage was more bug related than fungus related. I know it's late but without any further knowledge, I applied GrubEx today. I live in Texas where the high today was 98°F still. It's there something else I should use or is the damage done already and I need to wait until next year?

Me too! I have never put a chemical insecticide down for similar reasons and because we do organic gardening but for grubs you just don't need chems. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts Steven!

Its July 4 th here and I just saw flying beetles for the first time flying over the lawn .They may be June bugs . We had some very hot days and after a shower I noticed them the next morning. should I apply Sevin now or wait about two weeks for eggs to hatch ?

Sevin is something I really don't like but it would be your bet for Sept/Oct application. The majority female bugs are probably underground now so at this point your best options are a product that uses imidacloprid or bt. Bt is much better for the biology in your lawn but isn't as long lasting. Imidacloprid will work better and for longer but it does harm beneficial bugs so I usually only recommend that for bad infestations or properties that had significant grub damage in prior seasons. Remember that grubs are not a bad thing, healthy lawns have them, we just want to prevent infestations which can be quite destructive. Walmart I think carries Ikes Grub Control which uses imidacloprd and I use Grub Out from Lawnbox. There's probably plenty of other brand options out there though, just look for active ingredient labels.

absolutely I would put grub control down the first season. 1st season the roots of sod are still establishing so keeping grubs off them will only strengthen the turf faster.

well in the mid fall or mid spring if you randomly start seeing grass spots that start dying off for seemingly no reason, just dig a clump or dead grass out and scratch around in the dirt below. If you see a grub then that's probably the culprit. Most healthy lawns have grubs but if you start seeing die-off then that's a big sign. If you have moles in your yard, that's another big sign since they eat grubs. If you have a lot of beetles at different times of the year you may have grubs in the lawn since grubs turn into beetles. If you have healthy grass you can even dig a chunk out of it and see if you find grubs under, just put the grass chunk back neatly afterwards. If you find some then you may be able to halt an infestation before damage happens. Not everybody needs grub control but once you see the signs then jumping on it is the only way to save the root systems of your grass.

I also never did anything to my grass other than mow until now when I got sod I want to maintain it. Never watered, fertilizerd or did weed control on my previous lawn so idk if it was a good target for grubs. Should I wait until I see an issue or just be in the safe side and put down the grub control? I’m trying not to do more than necessary on new sod and over stress it the first year but also don’t want to ruin my investment. Also looks like Scott’s grubex is banned where I live I can’t buy it. Spoke to my sod farm and they said if I have an issue with grubs than use Dylox in 3rd week of august. I guess I have to wait until I have an issue to treat since I can’t use a preventative in NY now?

I am in Tennessee and have armadillos that scratch my lawn trying to get at the moles that eating off the grubs. What can I do to stop this cycle other than shooting the armadillos? I have an acre of lawn.

I've never dealt with armadillos nor have I researched them...but if you are correct that they want to get to the moles then to get rid of the moles you take away their food source of grubs. Kill adult grubs in early spring then prevent new grubs in late Spring. Over time the moles will go find food elsewhere hopefully taking the armadillos with them. Probably if there is enough chickens in a small enough space but I wouldn't bank on it for regular backyard chicken raising. One thing I know for sure though is you'll get more flies. We sure did with our last flock.

Excellent question and I couldn't answer without doing research. I'll be planting clover in the fall on my hill yard so I need to research that for sure. My gut tells me the grubs will prefer grass roots over clover roots because clover is not a grass but that's just a hunch. When it comes time to document my process on growing a mixed stand of buffalograss and clover later this year ill be a lot more confident in my words.

Another option is to use one of the products in this video for a few years and at the same time add the nematodes or the Milky spores. Giving them time to populate your soil.

Nice vid but i dislike the final end decision. The spore or something similar is a permanent solution which grows naturally in the lawn over time. The final grub x or whatever is just yet ANOTHER product you need to purchase and apply repetitively. It just doesn't make for a realistic idea for the average person scheduling to put up wards of 10 various things on their lawn every year (unless the legit have nothing better to do). Beyond that if you consider a lawn a self contained ecosystem or sustainable at all on it own a serious effort needs to be made to make it a self perpetuating self sustaining ecosystem. Aware of course at certain times this may be unrealistic (infestation, drought, something) but for the most part me personally I'm trying to have as little effort and time in my lawns as possible with hopefully making them (somehow) basically self sustaining. This channel is still better than many i guess which others often have you adding stuff to your lawn near constantly. About the opposite of natural or sustainable

That's a very thoughtful comment, I appreciate your input and opinion. I do lots of apps on my lawn like many other youtube lawn guys but I do mine for similar purposes to what you described. Although I don't strive for lowest effort (making these vids is way more effort than actually applying products 😆) I do strive for sustainable soil systems and plant systems that don't need chemical inputs, fungicides, or tons of water. My apps on my lawn build soil biology, strengthen root systems, improve grass defenses to disease drought, and general stresses. I dislike fungicides and im not thrilled that I used a fungicide last fall so I think we probably agree on a lot. You've inspired me to look even deeper into the spore option because I do many things that take a long time to take effect and that might be something I shouldn't cast aside so quickly.

@@TurfMechanic I'm at that "stage". From reseeding many times, truck loads of fill. Thousands of dollars spent and upkeeping 2 properties for 20 years I've come to the conclusion the reason everything's been so difficult is I've spent a lot of time and money on "temporary" fixes without actually having a long term plan to make them self sustaining at all. So this is my new endeavor self sustaining (as much as possible) lawns. As in i bought clover I'm considering adding to the mix though my neighbor tells me I'm crazy for messing up my lawns i am seriously considering it. And red creeping fescue as it's about the only thing actually native around here to the area. Basically i haven't been thinking through all I've done for the long term, or really thinking it through at all as a actual plan or strategy which I'm trying start to do now.

Yeah a few is fine, too many is a bad thing for the lawn and they draw in moles that like to eat them. You don't need to eradicate but controlling them is pretty important for the sake of the lawn. Btw, I can totally say those chemical names these days! Lol 😁

Great video! I am not sure if I have grubs, but I did see some here and there when I dug out a part of a tree root and also my lawn is thin and bare. I threw down GrubOut a couple of days ago to be safe. Do you know how fast GrubOut works?

Nice, grubout will start working in the first day or so assuming you watered it in to the soil. It will work great for about 10 days with minimal residual effectiveness between day 10-15 and beyond. If you only have some grubs it will prevent a grub problem next season while still leaving some in your lawn to prevent full extermination. I think the optimal time to drop gubout is probably about July 4 but you are close enough that you should be fine.
