HOW TO EASILY PRINT ONTO ALMOST ANY SHAPE

When I started out with UV Printing, it was pretty complicated to learn how to print onto different shapes within the printer software. After talking with Justin Fischer, it became a lot easier.

I used Adobe Illustrator to design everything.

Great and informative video, thanks Trevor, As a suggestion for another video idea, people are often scared of the maintenance part of operating a UV printer and are scared of the idea that the printer HAS to be used constantly to avoid ink hoses getting clogged and causes you to need to send the machine for repair. So something that talks about this aspect of the UV printer may also be useful for everyone. Best wishes.

Hi Trevor, I am a printer in the UK and I use the Mimaki roll to roll large format UV printer. Have you experimented with creating textures / graphics or wording in clear as an overlay on your images. Something we call spot UV in the printing trade. It's as simple as creating a third artboard / page with the items you want printed in clear set to a single colour (typically 100% black or magenta) that you then use the print management software to convert that page to clear ink. In Mimaki's print software you can actually choose whether it is gloss or matte finish also. You can also use clear ink under the colour inks to create "3D" effects under the printed image. building up layers would create a more 3D effect. Such fun can be had with UV printers. I have been using CorelDraw since version 3 and it is my PREFERRED design software. Wouldnt it be easier to print registration marks on your substrate you are printing your art on then using your laser to see the registration amrks then cut them out? Well, assuming you have a camera on your laser

If you have a laser that has a registration mark camera then yes. If not, this is an easy way to print onto laser cut items.

Trevor. Are you working natively with 8 bit RGB in AI (or even PS) then saving to your file so that the printer software will convert...or are you working with CYMK from the get go? I've noticed a saturation difference. How do you get your monitor colors to match your prints (excluding substrate absorption variances)?? I've heard of using calibration tools like colorimeters, but it would be interesting to get your take on it. Thanks for sharing!!

To be honest I’m still pretty new to the printer stuff. I usually design in RGB and convert to CMYK. It probably isn’t the best way but I haven’t spent a lot of timing looking into it. There’s so much to learn.

I used a clipping mask. That may be a video I need to make.
