More people should see this. You saved me the headache of trying to obtain a decent sized bottle of nitric acid. I found some on Amazon that unfortunately is not very good quality and couldn't find any other listings. And I don't want to use sulfuric acid because that's going to damage the gold. And I did not want to have to jump through any hoop shifts to get some. Before anybody says what about muriatic acid, I don't know if that will work. I don't know if it'll eat away at the soldering or the board itself. I try to research it, but couldn't get a straight answer.

Thanks Tin Man. Hadn't really thought of using a heat gun, but will look into investing in one. Looks much easier than the method I have been removing pins from mother boards and such. Thanks also for the info on removing the core and magnets of the microwave mechanism. I have several that I haven't finished scrapping.

I've been saving gold pins and other goodies not that I have the knowledge to refine any of it but maybe I can gift it really something to someone who does this scale of refining or has more use for it then I do ♻🌎👍p.s here in Alberta Canada we get charged for dropping off ewaste in our city's however county dumps and landfills out in the rural areas we have ewaste and plastic recycling bins but we pay for the dump/landfill use ito a extra charge with your property taxes but it covers all waste and recycling trash! They also have a up cycle sheds set up to leave unwanted things that still work or might have value or use to someone else and if the employee working there likes you he well let you even scrap out what you want from the metal and other waste bins at your own risk!

you can also use a clothes iron and make a holder to turn it upside down and leave the board to set on, make sure to move air outside away from yourself.

I've been collecting circuit boards from electronics and flat screens and I have a few questions to ask you. There's tags connected to the screen and circuit board is there some gold in them? And in your opinion what would be a sizable amount to start the separation process? I wish I could show you what I've collected so far I think I have a nice collection but I'm gonna keep stacking it

I've gone through two heat guns already. You'll find the elements burn out fairly quickly. If they have two settings, turn it from high to the low range before shutting it off. The lower setting will help it cool down without fatigue / heat cracking the element. I have a vice I hold motherboards in, place a tray underneath it to collect all the pins and chips during depopulation. I typically pry off the aluminum capacitors because they can explode when heated. The transistors, resistors, diodes, that I can cut off with my dykes (diagonal cutting pliers) I do so before heating the board with my airgun. The only thing I use heat to remove are the gold plated pins / sockets, MLCCs, mosfets, flat resistors, and IC chips off the circuit board. I find it pays to sort and stow away items I depopulate from the boards at the end of each day. This way, I don't have to sort through several buckets full of items over a week or two. Remember to take care not to burn yourself or catch adjacent items on fire.
