I easily remove rust from my old craftsman table saw. Don't buy a new low quality table saw. YeahPete has a tip, buy an old used cast iron saw that looks in bad shape. Easy to eat rust with vinegar or electrolysis. Paint is cleaned with rubbing alcohol and polished with vehicle polish. Do not oil the internals as they will collect sawdust.

that was the first table saw that i bought as a teenager...$75.00 well used. cut allot of timber with it. one of the best things that i did to make it run smoother was to add a link belt. good luck and have fun with it.

@@YeahPete you will be amazed at how much smoother your saw will run. they are directional, so make sure to install it properly, it is an inexpensive upgrade to an old saw like yours.

Usually that type cast iron saw uses a 10" blade. Odd that one uses an 8" blade. I rebuilt an old Craftsman 10" cast iron table saw into a very nice cabinet saw setup with table top extensions. I built a square tube frame all around the sides and exit end of the table and added MDF with laminate Formica on it. Then installed a new arbor, bearings and even a new motor with a twist-lock belt and Biesemeyer 50" fence and it runs like a top. Old is new again!

I have a suggestion if you’re doing anything but rough carpentry junk the rip fence, and as with most OEM miter gages no good. I make custom furniture and cabinets with mine, properly setup these saws are super accurate. I have several of these saws price was free to $50, after mods about $400 including a “new” motor, can not touch a decent saw for 3 times the price

Thanks for the comment! You're right. I made some sweet cubbies, and quickly noticed how inaccurate the fence is. That video will be up... Eventually. If I ever do fine woodworking with it again I will have to address the fence. Did you buy a stand-alone fence or make one yourself?

Yeah Pete I ended up with one from Jet, Grizzly has several nice ones not cheap but worth it. Check Banggood for some deals on some very good miter gauges,

I hope you put something on the table and extensions to keep them from rusting again. I've been told that paste wax works well. I guess well see as I have to do the same thing to a saw I have and I've got some old carnuba floor wax just collecting dust I'm going to try. I'm also going to build a cover for it as I had just a piece of cardboard sitting on it for over a year and the rust hasn't gotten any worse. I wish I had time to disassemble it but I don't. Nice job.

I'm in the process of doing my father's old 72 Craftsman tablespoon I've just been scrubbing the top forever lol. Did the vinegar pit the cast iron at all?
@YeahPete
@YeahPete Жыл бұрын
Science says it will pit but I didn't notice any it looks brand new. Just 24 hours in the bath. Rust came right off like like nothing. You can maybe even try less time like check after 8 hours. Electrolysis does not pit. It's a bit more of a pain to set up but no pitting.

It actually works awesome this technique!!! The only thing I like to know, is why does it need to be neutralized with water and baking soda afterwards? (I already done this step, it’s just for knowledge purposes).

Thanks for the comment. Im not sure the science behind it, but it makes sense.
@stormchasecom

Vinegar is a light acid, but it is an acid. It gets inside of the pores and unless its neutralized, it never stops "eating"; eventually that can lead to pitting.

When you did this you said you used canola oil but could use motor oil or anything you have. Do you know if it’s better to use 1 oil over another? Thanks for the video, I am going to be doing this after Christmas!

Thanks for the comment. Motor oil would probably be fine. Machine oil probably best. I dont think I would use used oil. Its all dark and murky and contaminated with heavy metals.

How much water to vinegar did you use?
@YeahPete
@YeahPete 3 жыл бұрын
It was about 7 gallons of water and 7 of those containers of vinegar. The rust came off so easily you can probably use half the amount of vinegar and just let it soak an extra day.

I had a saw like yours with a 22 inch deck, but no extension wings! :-(
@bigray2859

I hit send too soon, sorry. I couldn't find wings for it. After 2 years I gave up. I wanted a 10 inch with a 27 inch deck. I wanted older Craftsman, of course. After a year I couldn't find one that I could afford either. I came across a saw like yours with one wing cheap, I bought it. I decided one wing wasn't to my liking. Again the hunt for wings is on. I couldn't find any wings again. :-(. I then put an add on c-list asking for wings, nothing:-(. I then ran into a twin of my saw real cheap. I decided to use the new saw as my extension wings. It would bolt together nicely. Before I could bolt the saws and wing together some guy responds to my c-list add. He has two wings for $20. I bought them. Now this project is getting way out of control :-). I bolted it all together, wing, saw, wing, saw, wing. If I recall correctly, I now have a monster saw with a 66" x 20" deck. I run a combo blade in one saw and a dado stack in the other. The fence connects perfectly. I also added a front extension on it which brings the deck to 27" x 66". This setup is way more than I need, I would have been happy with one saw, two wings :-). But it is super cool and I have just about $100 invested including the stand 👍. I need to clean my decks up like yours. My saws have tin shed disease, fighting rust is a constant battle. Great video! Thank you!
