How to easily repair "fix" holes or cracks in aluminum sheets, plates, tanks, and pots using a quality aluminum brazing rod like Alumite brand. Using a clean stainless steel brush just before initial brazing is essential for excellent results. Not removing oxidation/corrosion will result in a very poor repair.
Alumite & Alumaloy brazing rods BOTH work great. Please refer to the link posted below if you're interested in purchasing these rods:

These rods are not as easy as the adverts make it look..these rods require a lot of heat more than a propane torch produces..I had many failed attempts using propane alone and map gas wasn't much better..For anything thicker than 2 mm u have to use a gas oxygen torch...
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 6 ай бұрын
No a propane torch produces sufficient amount of heat. If you are repairing a thick piece of aluminum, or large piece of aluminum then yes you're going to need more heat

You might have addressed this earlier but WHY the stainless brush? Could you use a Bronze Brush? Also, would this repair hold with a hole in a piston head from a valve cover braking off? What can I say, I like to recycle!
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 9 жыл бұрын
The stainless steel brush is recommended because it leaves nothing behind to contaminate the brazed area, and also because it is much harder than aluminum. I would say the repair would work, but you also have to realize that the piston and brazing rod are not the same exact metals. They will both expand & contract to heating or cooling in a slightly different way. Give it a try, if you do a very good job, it may last a very long time. Nothing to lose.

worked great for me on 1/8" hole in aluminum canoe. I did it in the sun - the aluminum was thin and ambient temp was 70 but the canoe was probably about 100 degrees from the sun. Used yellow propane bottle and the whole project only took about 30 min - including cleaning aluminum, heating and brazing hole, grinding and cleanup. I'm sure with thicker aluminum and/or a bigger hole it will take more time. THANK YOU very much for posting the video!!!!

Seems to me that you could have saved a lot of Propane by placing the large Aluminum pot in a 500 degree oven first to preheat the whole item. Then it won't suck away all your heat so fast. You do the same thing when repairing Cast Iron items to prevent thermal shock. Cast Iron actually needs to be put back in the oven after the repair so it can cool slowly and lessen the chance of it cracking and spoiling your repair job.

I did a similar repair several years ago. I preheat the pot (Magnalite) in the oven to 400*, to minimizing the heat sinking problem. Then I brazed the crack. Once finish I placed it back in the oven and turned it off. Let it cool down over night. Still using the pot to this day. Good video.

Could you use this pot (and particularly the weld spot) over an open flame (say a propane burner) after it cools and sets? Or would the weld fall out? My turkey fryer pot has a hole in it and I'd like to repair it. But if I can't use the pot on the fryer propane burner after repairing it then it doesn't help me much.

Hi Robbie. Just make sure the area is SUPER clean(bright and shiny), and only apply enough heat to get the brazing rod to melt when touched to the aluminum surface. You'll likely need to use a MAPP gas torch. BTW, nice Gag Grouper. I freedive & spearfish. I've blasted some big ones too in the past.

I read the aluminium must be heated as well, so the material can be reshaped. Or is that not needed with thinner aluminium? maynardcat As long as you clean the area extremely well using a stainless bristle brush, and do not apply too much heat, you will be able to repair the area. As you heat, keep testing the temp of the pot by touching the brazing rod to the pot, when it starts melting, pull back and maintain that level of heat! The initial filler needs to be brushed into the surface when molted before applying the rest of the brazing rod. When cool, file, or grind to shape. Thanks For Watching! Can this brazing work on repairing a crack on an aluminum oil pan? i recently bought a car and that owner was using JB weld etc.. trying to repair the crack but it still leaks and load be hold I didn't know so now I'm stuck with the car. Replacing it would be too much so was looking to repair. Thanks!

if its for a car engine for what its worth just buy a new sump. the last thing you want is a repair failing and then engine seizure that could cost 100's maybe 1000's thats if its not your own life as you dont know when the engine is going to seize. believe me i done it myself at 100mph. and ground to a halt when i was on a race track, i just know what to listen out for. if you don't know what your doing. leave it to a qualified mechanic. i myself am a HGV mechanic and its not acceptable to be repairing sumps to engines you can ask any GENUINE mechanic the same question and get the same answer.. regardless if its a crack or a hole. its scrap just bin it and buy a new one.

if the guy doesn't have $300 bucks for a new oil pan don't you think he wouldn't have $300 bucks to take it to a pro? and if he did don't you think he would just buy a new one?? common guys you have brain for a reason.

I have aluminum ports on my truck's throttle body and one of the ports has holes from passing 34 years of antifreeze. I want to fill in the holes but I am afraid that heating the port up will melt it. Any thoughts on this scenario? Appreciate any input..thks...hc
