I just did this the other day. I took out the radiator fan (it’s only 2 10mm bolts and it slides right out the top). Once that’s out, there’s SO MUCH SPACE FOR ACTIVITIES

Mine were 9mm, but other than that this was a great idea. Once the fan/shroud assembly is removed you do not even need to be under the car. I have a 5-speed manual and there was nothing in the way but air. My 2004 fires right up now and is ready for the work week.

This video saved my bacon this morning - didn't have to have my '06 Matrix towed to a shop and wait to get it back. Saved a bunch of money, too! I am thankful for guys like you willing to share their expertise to help others save time and money by teaching them how to do things for themselves. Much appreciated!

Cool. I just replaced my starter on a 2006 Matrix. I removed the fan shroud (takes a couple of minutes) and it made the whole job 10x easier working topside only. Just be careful not to damage radiator fins.

I just wanted to say thanks for the video. I searched everywhere for how-to help with the starter for the 2009 1.8L engine and couldn't find much. I don't think I would have been able to figure this out without your video. And thanks for pointing out the location of the bolt on the other side. Again, many thanks.

This video just saved myself some time and $$$! Had a starter lying around for a day like today for my wife's 04 Matrix. The toughest part was the lack of working space, getting the starter in n out, the night sky and the cold! Lol

Thank you. Had a little bit of trouble knowing for sure the bolts I found were the right ones, but as long as you know you unscrew the bolts from opposite sides and are generally in the right area, seemed like the bolts were reasonably easy to pick out after a felt around for a few minutes. Also found it was easier to unscrew the bottom screw from under the car, with a ratchet wrench extension. Could probably also do it ok, with the ratchet wrench extender from above in the hood.

@@HowtoAutomotive Nothing to thank (it is the true). Your video is pretty good , it made 90% of the work easier. Just in case: by mistake I found the starter can be pulled out from the upper part. Just turn it over from orginal position , pass the back, move fan's blade, and use that space,in between the blades, to pass one corner ( where bolt goes), then the other. And the same backwards to to install the new one. So no jack required.

Trying to do this myself and I found this video as clear as mud. Removed the radiator fan and removed the nuts on either side of the wiring harness but I can't figure out where the other bolts are because all I can see in the video is your arm and the top side of the engine.
@carletonrutherford1799
@carletonrutherford1799 Жыл бұрын
After you remove the fan, which is 2 bolts, 3 plastic clips holding the harness, and the overflow hose, the fan comes right out. Then, where the starter is, there is a rubber boot, pull that out of the way, and use a 12 mm socket to remove the wire attached to the starter. Then unplug the little black wiring harness. When you are looking at the starter, look to the right about 6 or 7 inches, there might be a hose hiding the bolt. Bend down a bit, push the hose out of the way, and you will see a 14 mm bolt, undo that one. As for the other 14 mm bolt, it is hiding just on the other side of the harness you unclipped from the starter, and the 12 mm bolt you took off to remove the wire under the rubber boot. It is about a quarter inch down, and towards the motor. If you have a good light, and bend down, you should be able to see it.

Thank you for the video. I took the fan though to make it easier and it worked. Now the problem I have (hence my question for everyone) is where can I get the replacement bolts for the starter (once of the bolts is stripped). Any suggestion will be gladly appreciated.

1:32 Good information. The only thing I would say is, it only takes 2 bolts, 3 plastic clips holding the harness, and unplugging the overflow hose, to remove the fan. It takes about 5 minutes, and makes things SO much easier. No need to drop the starter down, you can just work from the top of the motor very easily.

GREAT video!! Just one thing: remind your viewers to route the starter wires “behind” the solenoid, not in front when they put the new starter in. Otherwise the wires don’t reach and orientation is wrong. I had to loosen the starter to re-route the wires. Otherwise a perfect aid. Saved my ass.

I call that government work when I work on family rigs. I've got that same Cornwell Platinum box just in Black. How are you liking your box? I'm not loving the drawer latching system got one drawer that will not latch unless you pick up on the release. And now that the drawers are loaded down I find that the locks will not release on both sides when opening the drawers from any hand position. Maybe do an update video on the tool box with your opinions about it

Disconnect the negative only? I would have thought you disconnect the positive only, or both. That way you can't put yourself between the positive and the ground by accident.
