I wish more children were taught etiquette. It's a real skill! This lady is deligtful with the children. I had to teach myself these things. It was nerve racking when I entered the business world. I felt as if I was on the back foot for a little while.

I learned tines down, always. To scoop, put the knife down and switch the fork to the right (American style).

Tines down in European style. That is one of the distinctions between the two styles. Tines up for American.

Hi there if you're referring to mash potato, mash potato is supposed to be soft and if it is soft, it will remain on the back of the fork. However, if it is too challenging, proceed by scooping it onto your fork as if it is rice. No stress.

If we can eat Western food the Western way then you all should eat our food in our way. Eat rice with spoon and fork or chopsticks if the rice is in a bowl.

@@emmarose7491 Hi Emma, not sure what your point really is there. But you're right. Many of us do eat with hand here in Malaysia and it's super common. I eat my lunch with my colleagues everyday and they all eat with their hand. Anyway, I just wanna say that you won't find a single soul that uses a fork and a knife when eating rice here in Asia. ☺

We have discovered that having food while teaching causes the students to be more interested in eating rather than learning the protocols. It is our custom to take them to a five star restaurant after the workshop.
