I had to do my CBT over 2 days as i wasn't getting the hang of some of it. BUT the emergency stop was the only thing i could do every time correct without fail... They were shocked and so was i. It really is easy to do.

ha. I just got back home from doing my A2. Test is on Friday. Good timing Spicy. Love you! Edit: Because of my shit 125 brakes and because most of my riding experience is racing and on track, the gradual braking (softer then harder) is a bit new to me. On track you brake hard at your marker and then ease the brake into the corner without letting go. So this is good advice. Thank you spicy.
@MrSlowestD165 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I think you left off a really important part there, Spicy. It 100% matters if your rear wheel locks, because if it locks you better keep it locked. If you release that rear while it's sideways that bike will high-side the shit out of you. At the MC safety courses here they teach: "If front locks, release immediately and re-apply" and "if rear locks, keep it locked until stop."
@samshaw56185 жыл бұрын
On my cbt, because my original instructor tried to get me through so we could get on the road by a certain time, neglected to tell me the bike didnt have abs and the proper technique and nearly highsided. New instructor, who understood newcomers helped with this alot

Very helpful, considering I have my CBT renewal on the 2nd of July. Only thing I feel even slightly nervous about is the U-turn. For some reason, the only slow speed manoeuvre I cannae do is a U-turn. Unfortunately, I have barely anywhere near me I can actually go to practice (not even a car park, really)

Try to find a shopping centre. Tescos or something, go when it's not busy and practice it a few times there. Remember, apply steady throttle and control your momentum with your clutch oh and ride the back brake.

jwkzzr when I was practicing my u turn I found a quiet country lane on a long straight part, kept doing u turns both ways. Most important part is looking where you want to go, really bend that head round to see where you want to end up. I was awful to begin with but as with any skill it’s down to practice practice practice. I now love slow control/balance. Try as Spicy recommended to try not to put feet down in everyday traffic. Good luck

When I need to do an emergency stop, I first deploy the parachute. While that is unfolding, I hit the release on the anchor windlass while digging both heels into the road. If all goes well, the parachute should cushion the shock from the anchor as it gains purchase, leaving me with just enough soles on my boots that I don't burst into flames. The only real stressful part is spending some time attempting to extract the anchor from the engine block of the BMW that was tailgating me...but...such is life. 🤷♀

For first timers this is great advice, but PULL IN THE CLUTCH! You dont need the additional rear braking. If your rear brake cannot lock the back wheel on its own something is wrong with it. Engine braking in an emergency stop makes controlling your bike much harder especially if it stalls, and also in an accident situation you may want to get the hell away from there to a safer place which you cannot do as quickly if you stalled.
@Mean-bj8wp5 жыл бұрын
Hi Spicy, with linked brakes when you pull the the front brake lever only the front brake operates. Push on the rear then the front does work a little as well. On my bike (Herald Scrambler 125) the front caliper has 2 large pistons either side of a smaller piston which are on different hydraulic systems. The rear slave cylinder has a hose that runs to the front caliper. The front caliper has 2 bleed nipples for each hydraulic system. Keep the vids coming always a highlight of the day when I see a new vid posted. Ride safe but have fun.
@kevinviney79955 жыл бұрын
Hi Mean1974, For some bikes with linked brakes, a degree of rear brake is applied when front lever is used. Most of the larger BMW bikes (eg GS & RT) operate in this way after tests by the manufacturer have shown this to be both safe and effective for the majority of riders.

Engine braking will indeed add to the force applied by the rear brake. But, it may be hard to predict because the amount of engine braking depends on which gear you're in. If you have ABS, it can only release the brakes to regain traction, it has no effect on the engine braking which may be sufficient to lock the rear wheel by itself on loose surfaces and/or in low gear. I think the effect of this will vary a lot from bike to bike, so I guess the answer is to practice hard braking on each bike you ride to get a feel for how it will react.
@spicy1105 жыл бұрын
Well as you are not down shifting you won't get a ratio jump to make it lock under engine braking.

I was taut on my cbt to rear break until you feel the weight change and then pull in front break
@spicy1105 жыл бұрын
Are you sure that's what they meant because....jesus its wrong as pretty dangerous. No weigh over the rear it will just lock up and you will lose all engine braking. It's always front first to transfer the weight to the front for the reasons explained here in.

So if you're in 6th gear and you only brake without the clutch, you'll just stall with no harm done to the bike?
@spicy1102 жыл бұрын
In 6th is going to be a lot of locking up. Lower gears would be less harsh, you don't wang to make a habit of it but yes in an emergency you want all the braking you can get. Remember when you use this is life or death, screw the bike!
